Star Award
If you can memorize all your addition facts
then you will earn the star award at the
end of first grade!
You have to say the answer before the
new fact appears. You have 5 seconds.
You cannot use your fingers.
Remember the flip flop facts always have
the same answer.
We have learned our facts in
groups.

The Doubles Rap
It’s the doubles baby. Let’s go! Let’s go!
It’s the doubles baby and we start with zero.
0+0=0
1+1=2
2+2=4
3+3=6
4+4=8
5 + 5 =10
6 + 6 = 12
7 + 7 = 14
8 + 8 = 16
9 + 9 = 18
10 + 10 = 20

Memory Tricks
for the Three
Big Doubles Facts
There are no curves in a 7
or in a 14…only straight
lines.
There is a letter S inside
of each 8.
The S is for
Sixteen.
The 2 circles in the 9’s can turn
into an 8.
18 jellybean
7 + 7 = 14
Let’s lean!
8 + 8 = 16
Go green!
9 + 9 = 18
Jellybean!

These are easy ones!
Zero is nothing, so the answer is right there
in the problem.

These are easy ones!
Just count by ones and say the next

The + 2’s
The Strategy
Think about the odd and even numbers and
counting by 2:
0 2 4 6 8 10
1 3 5 7 9 11
When you add 2 you get the next odd or
even number.

The
Neighbor
Numbers
The Strategy
When you find a neighbor number
It’s a doubles + 1
So you find the smaller number,
you circle it,
You double it,
Then you add 1 more.
example:
5+6
I know that those are neighbor numbers and 5 is smaller
I know that
5 + 5 = 10 and 1 more is 11
5 + 6 = 11
Hint:
The answers are always odd
numbers!
3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17

The + 10’s
The Strategy
Make a teen:
Just put a 1 in front of the number to turn it into a teen.
Think about the 100’s chart and the number that is
right under it.

The + 9’s
The Strategy
Look at the addend that is not 9
First take away 1
Then take make a teen by adding 10
9+6=
6 - 1 = 5 take away 1
5 + 10 = 15 make a teen
So 9 + 6 = 15
Example:
9+2
6+9
9+3
7+9

The + 3’s
The Strategy
Start with the bigger number and count on 3.

The
Doubles + 2
The Strategy
These can be done just like Doubles + 1
(Neighbor Numbers or Near Doubles)
Find the smaller number
Double it …
Then instead of adding 1 you add 2
Another Strategy
You can also think about a monkey in the
middle…
5+7
5
7
Between 5 and 7 is 6
Double 6 is 12
So, 5 + 7 = 12
6+8
5+7
The
Oddballs
The Strategy
You have to memorize these.
Start with the bigger addend and count on.
There are a few silly tricks…
The
4 + 7 = 11 Trick
I got money for (4) the store 7-eleven.
I’m going to buy a slurpee.
Don’t drink it too fast or you’ll get a
BRAIN FREEZE!
The
8 + 4 = 12 Trick
I went to a party and I ate like a pig!
I really ate (8) enough food for (4) 12 people.
Now I have a big stomach ache!
The 8 tricks
Think of the number 8 like the word
ate
3

ate 11

3 + 8 = 11

Congratulations!!
You just did all the first
grade addition facts!
