CCS: 1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten; decomposing a number leading to addition and
subtraction; and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.
Strategies such as doubles, doubles +1 and doubles +2 assist students in fluency when adding or
subtracting numbers.
Introduce this station material by reviewing the anchor pages.

Activity Name: Double Trouble
Standard: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Skill/Objective: (COPY IN YOUR PASSPORT) Doubles +1, +2
Directions:
1. Work with a partner.
2. You will need activity cards, an answer key and counting cubes.
3. Put the girl cards in a pile face down. Spread the boy cards in
front of you.
4. Tallest goes first.
5. Pick the top card off the girl pile, read it aloud.
6. Pick the matching number sentence – use the counting cubes for
help.
7. Pick the matching doubles, doubles +1 or doubles +2 that matches
the number sentence.
8. Partner checks the answers. If correct keep the cards. If not
correct return the cards.
9. Take turns until all the cards are gone.
Challenge: Sarah went to the store and bought 8 snickers and 9 twix.
Her mom wanted to know how many candies she bought. Help her
answer her mom. Tell her mom if it is a doubling, doubling+1 or a
doubling +2 strategy to solve the problem. Write your answer on a
Challenge Question Answer Sheet.
