0606.3.9 Graph ordered pairs of integers in all four
quadrants of the Cartesian coordinate system.
I CAN graph ordered pairs in ALL four quadrants!!!

A coordinate plane is formed by two number
lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The
point of intersection is the zero on each
number line.
• The two number lines
are called the axes.

• The horizontal axis is
called the x-axis.

• The vertical axis is
called the y-axis.

• The two axes divide
the coordinate plane
into four quadrants.
A coordinate plane is formed by two number
lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The
point of intersection is the zero on each
number line.
• The point where the
axes intersect is
called the origin.
An ordered pair gives the location of a point
on a coordinate plane. The first number tells
how far to move right (positive) or left
(negative) from the origin. The second
number tells how far to move up (positive) or
down (negative).
The numbers in an ordered pair are called
coordinates. The first number is called the
x-coordinate. The second number is called
the y-coordinate.
The ordered pair for the origin is (0,0).
Have you ever used a
ladder?
First you have to move
the ladder towards what
you want to clime
Second, you climb up
Or used an elevator?
First you have to go over
and into the elevator
Then you go up or down

Coordinate Plane Brain Pop
We use a coordinate
system on earth to find
exact locations. The
equator is like the x-axis,
and the prime meridian is
like the y-axis.
The lines that run eastwest are lines of latitude.
They are measured in
degrees north and
south of the equator.
The lines that run northsouth are lines of
longitude. They are
measured in degrees east
and west of the prime
meridian.

Give the coordinates for point X
From the origin, X is 4 units
right and 1 unit down.

1. Which location in
Texas is closest to the
ordered pair (5, 2)?
Galveston
2. Which location in
Texas is closest to the
ordered pair (6, 1)?
El Paso
3. What ordered pair
best describes the
location of Dallas,
Texas?

4. Which place in Texas
is located in Quadrant III
of this coordinate
plane?

My Example
Choices for the picture could be one of the following:
 Animals
 Letters / Words
 Name / Initials
 Flowers
You have a choice of what grade you want to earn:
 A:
drawing in all four quadrants and have at least 3 or more stops
 B:
drawing in all four quadrants and have at least 1 or 2 stops
 C:
drawing in all four quadrants and no stops
 D:
not in all four quadrants

Rough draft of your picture.
Rough draft picture approved by the teacher.
After teacher approval put dots/points where they belong and label
them for capital letters.
Write your letters on the side of the paper in order, including stops.
Write the ordered pair and the matching letter.
2nd sheet of graph paper - plot your points and connect.
List ordered pairs (coordinates) on a separate piece of paper. This
will be exchanged with other students.
On Monday you will turn in rough draft, final picture, and ordered
pairs (coordinates).
 Turn
to your shoulder partner
and explain how the graphing
project meets the objective for
today!!!!
