Focus/Introduction:
• Now we will learn to multiply with decimal
numbers.
• This is not much different than multiplying
whole numbers.
• We need to be able to multiply decimal
numbers because money is involved with
decimals, parts of a whole, etc.
Steps for Multiplying Decimals
1. Ignore the decimal point and multiply as with
whole numbers.
2. Count and underline the numbers behind or to the
right of the decimal point in both factors.
3. Place the decimal point that many places from the
right in the product.
• Strategy: Count the number of places that follow
the decimal points.
Guided Practice: (DOK 2)
• Application Problem
• A group of your friends is going to the movies.
The cost of a movie during matinee time is
only $5.25 a person. You have a group of 6
people going with you. What is the total cost
of all the movie tickets?
Additional Examples:
• 2.36 x 0.5
• 498 x 6.23
• Theo’s hourly salary is $15.35. If he worked 42.25
hours last week, how much did he earn?
• Note: Point out that because we are working with
money, we must round our answers to the
hundredths place.
Independent Work/Activity: (DOK 1)

• You may finish for homework if time does not
permit for you to finish during class.
Closure:
