Number Models from Prep to Year 6
VELS progression points
related to number models
Slideshow Focus
Link strongly to the curriculum (VELS) online. The curriculum is the one
constant that is core to our daily business.
Recognise the importance and ubiquity (see below) of visual and
kinaesthetic number models in maths learning (prep to six and beyond).
Consider the power in taking on a ‘partnership’ (whole school/cluster) that
agrees to focus on explicitly using number models from prep to six to
enrich student learning and confidence with number and number sense.
At cluster level, implement strategies that ensure we become ‘Model
schools’ (pun intended).
The process will involve:
•
Getting closer to the curriculum and its resources for purposes
of planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting
•
Use of above to develop strong ‘Assessment for learning’
pedagogy
•
Support teaching and learning, ICT and thinking, and use of
smartboards, through effective use of internet, Digilearn,
online resources, and purpose-built software (2Simple and
Microsoft Office)
•
Working smarter, not harder
•
Having fun and developing confidences (both are which are
contagious in maths education).
