Integers on a Number Line
Grade 6
Standard 1.C.1.a
Fun Facts
• Negative numbers are to the left of 0.
• Positive numbers are to the right of 0.
• Remember, to help you when ordering
integers from least to greatest use a
number line.
Ordering Signed Numbers
• Place these signed numbers in order from
least to greatest: -2, 3, -4
• Draw a simple number line
Graph the points on the number line.
When you look at the numbers on the number line from
left to right, they will be in order.
Ordering Signed Numbers
• So, the order of the numbers from least to
•
•
•
greatest is -4, -2, 3
Remember negative numbers are to the left of
zero, and positive numbers are to the right of
zero.
As you move to the left on a number line the
value of the numbers decrease.
As you move to the right on a number line the
value of the numbers increase.
Example
• Place these numbers in order from least to
•
•
•
•
•
greatest: 5, -4, and 0.
Remember to draw your number line.
Negative to the left of zero
Positive to the right of zero
Graph your points and read them from left
to right.
The correct order, -4, 0, 5
Your Turn
• Place these integers in order from least to
greatest: -1, -4, and 0
• Place these integers in order from least to
greatest: -5, 6, and 4
Answers
• -4, -1, 0
• -5, 4, 6
Finding the Number in
Between
• The number - 4 1/2 is between which two
integers?
• Remember the rules and draw the number
line.
Is -4 1/2 between -3 and -4 or is it between -4 and -5?
Where would it be located on the number line?
-4 1/2 is between -4 and -5
Finding the Number Between
• Use the number line to answer the
following questions.
Identify a number between -2 and -3.
Identify a number between 1 and 2.
Identify a number between -3 and -4.
Remember
• When ordering integers use the number
line. Depending on the direction you read
the numbers you will have ordered the
numbers from least to greatest (left to right)
or greatest to least (right to left).
