RULES FOR MULTIPLYING
INTEGERS
The product of two integers with the
SAME SIGN is positive.
The product of two integers with
DIFFERENT SIGNS is negative.
The product of zero and any integer is
zero.
RULES FOR DIVIDING
INTEGERS
The quotient of two integers with the
SAME SIGN is positive.
The quotient of two integers with
OPPOSITE SIGNS is negative.
The quotient of zero and any integer is
N/A.
EXAMPLES FOR THE RULES…
Multiplying
numbers with
the same sign
3(4) = 12
Multiplying
numbers with
different signs
-3(4) = -12 3(-4) = -12
Multiplying a
number with
zero
3(0) = 0
-3(-4) = 12
-3(0) = 0
*same rules apply for Division (dividing with 0 will = n/a)
REMEMBER…
A negative times a negative makes a
positive!!!!
1.) 2(-6)
-12
EXAMPLES…
1.) 12 ÷ (-4)

2.) 4(-5)
-20
2.) -32 ÷ (-8)
3.) -7(-2)

3.) -100 ÷ 5

WORD PROBLEM…
After it is launched from a boat, Deep Rover
descends 60 feet per minute. Where is it in
relation to sea level three minutes after its launch?
Directions: Use a number line to show repeated addition.

Therefore, Deep Rover is at –180 ft., or 180 ft. below sea level.
