Whole Number and
Decimal Operations

• Page 31 in JBHM binder (DOK 2)
Focus/Introduction:
• We have been dividing whole numbers but
now we will divide by decimals.
• Why do we need to divide decimals?
• Money, parts of something as a pizza, or any
other type of decimal number.
• Who knows the definitions for dividend,
divisor, and quotient.
• Strategy: Move the decimal point to the end of
the divisor and then move it the same number of
places in the dividend.
• Turn to page 51 to begin.
• Do not work ahead. We will work them together.
Guided Practice: (DOK 1)
• Steps for Dividing Decimals
1. Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right
enough places to make it a whole number.
2. Move the decimal point in the dividend to the
same number of places to the right. Add zeros if
necessary.
3. Divide.
4. Place the decimal point in the quotient directly
above the decimal point in the dividend.

Swinging Monkeys!
Follow these steps and you will be
great at dividing decimals!
Remember: Whatever the OUTSIDE
monkeys does – the INSIDE monkeys
does also!

Steps in Dividing Decimals
1. Make the divisor a whole number by moving (swingin’) the
decimal to the right as many places as it takes.
2. In MONKEY TERMS: Whatever the outside monkey does (how far
it swings) the inside monkey does also. Then the monkey climbs
up and sits on the roof!

Independent Work/Activity:
Closure:
• Handout #3 in JBHM binder for homework
• Set up the problems and move the decimal
point in the divisor and dividend.
• Just set up the problems.
• We will do the division Monday in class.
• This is page 71 in JBHM binder.
• Let’s set up number 1 together!
