How do you find the answers?
• Do you memorize the multiplication tables?
• Do you have trouble memorizing the
multiplication tables?
• Can you figure out the answers without looking
at the multiplication grid?
• How do you find the answer to multiplication
problems?
• Here are some strategies that may help you
solve problems that you may not have
memorized.
Draw a picture of the problem.
Ex. Tabitha was having a party. All the quests were in the dining room
waiting for their meal. There were three tables in the room. There
were four people sitting at each table. How many people were at
the party?
3 tables X 4 at each table = _________
Use real objects
3 X 1=____
Draw an example of the problem
using circles and lines.
Ex. There were five cars in the parking lot.
Each car needed four new tires. How
many tires were needed all together?
Use a Hundred’s Chart.
I like to use colored disks to cover my
numbers. Look at the following problem:
3 X 8 = ______ Get 8 colored disks out.
Place the first disk on the number 3.
Count ahead 3 and place the next disk on
this number. Continue counting three and
placing the disks until all 8 disks are
placed.
3 X 8 = ______
Multiplication Rule
• Multiplication problems can be turned
around.
• 3 X 8 and 8 X 3 have the same answer.

Using Touch Points
• You know how to use touch points when adding.
• You can use the same touch points on your
numbers when multiplying. Counting the
touches is different, however.
• When using touch-points to multiply, you must
first know the multiplication sequence of that
number.
• It is easy to use the touch point strategy when
multiplying by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s because you
already know the sequence

The 9 Times Quickie
1. Hold your hands in front of you with
your fingers spread out.
2. For 9 X 3 bend your third finger down.
(9 X 4 would be the fourth finger etc.)
3. You have 2 fingers in front of the bent
finger and 7 after the bent finger.
4. Thus the answer must be 27.
5. This technique works for the 9 times
tables up to 10.
10 Times Quickie
1. Take any number and multiply it by 10.
When you do this you will add a 0 to that
number, moving the other numbers over
one place value.
2. Multiply 10 by 6 and you get 60
3. Multiply 10 by 3 and you get 30
4. Multiply 10 by 30 and you get 300
5. Multiply 10 by 50 and you get 500
The 4 Times Quickie
1. If you know how to double a number, this
one is easy.
2. Simply, double a number and then
double it again!
The 11 Times Rule
1. Take any number to 10 and multiply it by
11.
2. Multiply 11 by 3 to get 33,
3. multiply 11 by 4 to get 44.
4. Each number to 10 is just duplicated.
