Transcript ANDRE MARIE AMPERE
By Jewel Hayward
My scientist is named Andre Marie Ampere. He is a French physicist,
natural philosopher, and mathematician who is best known for his
important contributions to the study of electrodynamics. He invented
the astatic needle, a critical component of the modern astatis
galvanometer, and was the first to demonstrate that a magnetic field is
generated when two parallel wires are charged with electricity. I picked
Andre Marie Ampere because I thought he would be an interesting
person to learn about.
January 20 ,1782.
Hello, my name is Andre Marie Ampere. I’m sitting in my living room
watching my parents complain about money that they don’t have. As I thought
to myself, “Thanks for getting me a birthday present.” What wonderful parents
they are. Well, otherwise I wonder what we are going to do today? I hope we
can go t0 the park or something. Or maybe we can just sit home like last
birthday talking about why they didn’t get me a present and how they are sorry.
My sisters are fighting over the bathroom like always. Why do girls have to care
so much about how they look. Guys, we just wake up, get dressed, and brush
our teeth. But girls they have to get dressed (which takes them all the time in
the world), make sure their makeup and hair is perfect. Gosh, it just makes me
tired of just writing about it. Well, this is going to be my last diary entry for
awhile because I need a new diary and remember my parent don’t have enough
money to get me one.
•
1775- Andre Marie Ampere was born in Lyon, France.
•
1814- Ampere was elected the prestigious National Institute of Science, and was awarded
a chair at the University of France.
•
1820’s- Andre Marie Ampere began to formulate a combined theory of electricity and
magnetism, doing several demonstrations involving magnetic and electrical forces.
•
1826- Amperes most significant scholarly paper on the subject of electricity and
magnetism, titled Memoir on the Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamics Phenomena,
was published.
•
1836- Ampere died June 10, 1836 in Marseilles, France and was buried in the Montmartre
Cemetery in Paris.
André-Marie Ampere was a French physicist and mathematician who is
generally regarded as one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism.
The SI unit of measurement of electric current, the ampere, is named
after him. Ampère was born in Lyon, France on 20 January 1775. He
spent his childhood and adolescence at the family property at
Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or near Lyon. His father began to teach him
Latin, until he discovered the boy's preference and aptitude for
mathematical studies.
By this time Ampère had a fair reputation as both a
teacher of mathematics and as a research
mathematician and on the strength of this reputation
he was appointed répétiteur (basically a tutor) in
analysis at the École Polytechnique in 1804. Without a
formal education and formal qualifications his
appointment is surprising but shows that his potential
was recognized at this stage. His life, already
containing many tragedies, did not improve and he
embarked on a disastrous marriage
He got wedded to Jenny on 1 August 1806 but, before the birth of their
daughter on 6 July 1807, the couple were living apart and were not on
speaking terms. They were legally separated in 1808 and Ampère was
given custody of their daughter Albine.
Andre Marie Ampere was the son of the Jean- Jacques Ampere and
Jeanne-Antoinette, wealthy dealers of silk. Just before marriage, his
father acquired a country estate at Poleymieux- les-Mont's. This
became the family’s permant home after his father retired from
business in 1782. Ampere had two sisters, the older one, Antoinette,
and a younger sister, Josephine.
