Warm Up
According to the Yorkie Haven Rescue Association , eleven out
of twenty-five people own medium sized dogs and 13 out of
15 people own large sized dogs. Do more people own large or
medium size dogs?

13 out of 15 means

According to the Yorkie Association more people own large
sized dogs than medium sized dogs.
Does anyone know what the numbers to the right of zero are called?

What about a name for the numbers the left of zero?
What about zero? Is zero negative or positive?
Zero is not positive nor negative
From what has been discussed and observed, what are Integers?
Integers are the positive numbers, negative numbers and zero.
What does the positive sign indicate?
The positive (+) sign means numbers right of zero.
What does the negative sign indicate?
The negative (-) sign means numbers left of zero.
Integers are directed signed numbers that can be
shown on both a horizontal and vertical number line
Discuss with a partner your conclusions after observing
both number lines.
+3
The positive (+) sign means numbers right of zero
on the horizontal number line and above zero on the
vertical number line. These values are greater
than zero.

the horizontal number line and below zero on the
vertical number line. These values are less than

Integers are directed numbers. The positive (+)sign means numbers right of zero and the
negative (-) means numbers left of zero on the number line.
How would you describe the location and plot each integer on the number line?
-4
-4 is located 4 units left of zero.
-10
-10 is located 10 units left of zero.
3
3 is located 3 units right of zero.
6
6 is located 6 units right of zero.
-1
-1 is located 1 unit left of zero.
With a partner create several of your own, describe and plot on a number line.

Observe the number line. With a partner discuss and record your observations to the
questions listed.
a. What's happening to the values as they move from zero going to the right? What about
from +4 going farther to the right?
The values are greater whether moving right from 0 or +4.
b. What if the number moves right from -6? Is the same observation true as for a? Explain.
It doesn't matter where on the number line you start, if you are moving right the values
are greater. On the negative side the closer the value is to zero the greater it is and on
the positive side the farther away from zero the greater the value.
c. What happens to the values as they move from zero going to the left? What about from
-4 going farther to the left?
The values are less whether moving left from 0 or -4.
d. What if the number moves left from +6? Is the same observation true as for c? Explain.
It doesn't matter where on the number line you start, if you are moving left the values are
less. On the positive side the closer the value is to zero the less it is and on the negative side
the farther away from zero the lesser the value.

order numbers from least to greatest.
In sports such as golf or racing, a low number
is the best score and not a high number.
