Associative Property
By Monica Yuskaitis
The Associative Property
is like a man and woman
getting married. First,
they are each counted
separately, then after
they are married they are
counted as one, even
though they are still
separate people.
Before a couple are married
they are considered as two
separate people.
After the marriage they are
considered as one.
These numbers are all
separate.
4+5+9+3=
6x3x8x4=
The numbers with
parentheses around them
are counted as one number.
(4 + 5) + 9 + 3 =
6 x 3 x (8 x 4) =
Therefore, the operations
inside the parentheses must
be done first.
(4 + 5) + 9 + 3 =
6 x 3 x (8 x 4) =
The numbers are
associated
together.
Definition
Associative Property – the
addition or multiplication of a
set of numbers is the same
no matter how the numbers
are grouped.
(4 + 3) + 9 = 16
4 + (3 + 9) = 16
Definition
Parentheses – the enclosing
symbols ( ) which indicate
that the terms within are
considered as one unit.
(4 + 3) + 9 = 16
Definition
Parentheses – ( ) are also
called grouping symbols
(4 + 3) + 9 = 16
Order of Operations
The operations within
parentheses must be done
first before the other
operations.
(4 + 3) + 9 = 16
7 + 9 = 16

Solve these problems
Let n = 5
(16 – n) + 4 =
n – (3 + 1) =
(n + n) – 8 =

Check
Did you remember to do
the operations in the
parentheses () first?
Insert parentheses to make
each equation true
11 – 5 + 1 = 5
11 – (5 + 1) = 5
15 - 10 – 8 = 13
15 – (10 – 8) = 13
8 – 2 + 7 = 13
(8 – 2) +7 = 13
9 + 3 – 2 = 10
(9 + 3) – 2 = 10
