Ziggurats
Ziggurats
• Ziggurats were temples
built by the Sumerians to
pray and bring food for
the gods. They were
located in the center of
town and they were built
on platforms. Ziggurats
had stairs to the top and
a wall to protect it. They
were happy and exciting
places where people went
to daily.
Ziggurats
The ziggurats are similar to today
because we have churches where
people gather and worship god.
They are centers of their
communities just like ziggurats
were for the Sumerians.

Cuneiform Writing

Cuneiform Writing
• Cuneiform writing was the first writing system
made. Kings didn’t know how to write so scribes
did it for them. Scribes had to go to school to
learn how to write. They used clay tablets to
write on. At school they had to write straight
lines. If they did it wrong they got punished.
They wrote with reeds that they found near the
rivers. The rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates
rivers.

cuneiform writing
• Today writing is an important part of our society.
Our writing came from the Sumerians. The
people of Sumer had to go to school to learn
how to write just like today. Today we use
pencils and erasers. In Sumer, people used clay
tablets and wrote with reeds. Sumerians were
punished if they were late or did something
wrong. Today,if people are late they get in
trouble.
