Map of Mesopotamia...
Dictatorship or Organization?
The government was very organized in Mesopotamia.
There were loads of laws under king Hammurabi’s Code of Laws.
Financial compensation is still practiced in the Middle East today.
All the kings in Mesopotamia were very concerned to rule justly.
Fair or cruel?
Most crimes back then were punishable by death.
Hammurabi’s Code had different penalties for the same crime, but it really
depended on the social status of the victim and offender.
The idea of retribution was not in Sumerian law.
Hammurabi: good or bad?
King Hammurabi codified over 200 laws for his kingdom.
Hammurabi’s Code wasn’t used in courts.
His Code was almost the most important thing then, and it
applied to everyone.
Hammurabi’s successors weren’t able to maintain his
kingdom after he passed away.
Some religion?
Apparently, human’s were believed to have been created
to serve the Gods.
Gods were believed to have supernatural powers
Gods and Goddesses were very important in
Mesopotamian society
Too many beliefs?
There were loads of Gods and Goddesses back then
After the Sumerian clashed with Akkadian, the Gods
changed
The Gods had their own symbols
Demons vs. Spirits?
People in West Asia believed in supernatural demons and spirits good
and bad
Some people in West Asia were superstitious and would avoid the
misfortunes believed to be caused by some demons
Many of these “demons” had half - animal and half - human forms
An Artistic Civilization?
The discovery of writing came towards the end of
prehistoric age in Mesopotamia
The Sumerians seem to have developed one of the
world’s first ever systems of monarchy to govern
large areas, and the states of Sumer were ruled by
some kind of priest-king.
The Assyrians had a lot of access to good
amounts of stone - this was used to nicely decorate
palaces
Marvelous or too much?
King Nebuchadnezzar 2nd built the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon, a marvelous series of
terraced gardens
The Akkadian invaders quickly assimilated
Sumerian styles
The Mesopotamians seem very developed
Different styles of Art?
The Babylonians had practiced all of the
Mesopotamian arts, and had excelled in
brightly colored glazed tiles.
The Mesopotamian kingdoms had their
very own styles of art
Their styles of art were used abroad
