Naming and Representing Decimals
NAMING DECIMALS
If you can read it you can WRITE IT!
1st name your whole numbers (if any)
 2nd read the decimal like you would a whole
number
 3rd find the place value of the last digit in the
decimal portion of the number. (last name)
**Remember the decimal point reads “and”**


Next locate the place value of the last digit in the
decimal.
Tenths
Say the decimal like you would a whole number
and add the place value
3 tenths
Now add them all together including the decimal
point saying “and”
One and three tenths
Example 2
0.13
 There are no whole numbers in this
example so go to step two.
 The last digit in the decimal is 3 and it
is in the hundredths place.
 Since there is no whole numbers you
don’t read the decimal point. So just
read the decimal like a whole number
and add the place value
 Thirteen hundredths

To write decimals in standard form



This means to write the words as a number!
Find the decimal place value name in the words,
make you little marks to represent the place value.
Fill in the numbers to read the decimal correctly.
Write nine hundredths in standard
form.




it is hundredths. The hundredths place is two places
to the right of the decimal point. You don’t see the
word and in the question so there is no whole
numbers.
Make your marks to represent the place value like
