Serial and parallel connection of
resistors
Resistors may be connected (or arranged):
- serial (in a row)
- parallel (beside each other).



-in serial order the same current flows in all
resistors
-voltage is distributed to each resistor
according to Ohm’s law
-total resistance Rc is the sum of the
individual resistors

Rc = R1 + R2 …..+ Rn


-as a symbol of a parallel connection of
resistors we use two lines „||“
-for two resistors connected in parallel you
can use the simplified relationship:


-to calculate the combination of a serial and parallel
connection we will use the two preceding relationships
-for example, the total resistance Rc of this circuit is given by:

Electrotechnical schematic symbols:

Schematic symbol for the NTC thermistor

Schematic symbol for the PTC thermistor





A thermistor is:
-electrical component whose resistance is dependant on
temperature:
There are two types of thermistors
-NTC, known as a negistor – the components resistance
decreases with heat
-PTC, known as a pozistor- resistance increases with
heat.

1. Calculate the resulting resistance of this
series of resistors.
2. Calculate the resulting resistance of these
resistors connected in parallel.
