CELLPHOE-BASED REMOTE CONTROLLER FOR WATER PUMP
OBJECTIVE
 Inconvenience in switching on a water pump
installed in a remote industry is a common problem
faced by employer. Many circuits have been
developed to solve this problem. Most of them are
expensive and microcontroller-based.
 Here we present a cellphone-based remote controller
for water pump. By calling the cellphone attached to
the controller, the water pump can be directly
activated.

Concept of project
 Here two cell phones are used.
 When industry employer calling the
cellphone attached to the controller, the
water pump can be directly activated.
 Not required to go to go any special control
place.

WORKING OF PROJECT CIRCUIT
Previous slide shows the circuit of cellphone-based remote
controller for water pump. The circuit is built around DTMF decoder IC
MT8870 (IC1), timer NE555 (IC2) wired as monostable multivibrator
and a few discrete components

Once monostable timer IC2 is triggered, its output goes high for
the pre-set time period. The time period depends on the values of
resistor R7 and capacitor C4. It can be adjusted between 8 and 50
minutes using pot-meter VR1. The high output at pin 3 of IC2 energises
relay RL1 to switch on the water pump.

The triggering pulse for IC2 is generated by DTMF decoder IC1
and the arrangement of diodes D1 through D5. STD pin of IC1 provides
a high pulse when a valid tone-pair is received. Transistor T1 conducts
only when outputs Q0 through Q2 and Std are high simultaneously.
This can be achieved by sending digit ‘7’ through DTMF.

Features
 No need to point the remote to the device as in
infrared remote.
 Not limited by distance [range] as in RF [Radio
frequency] remote.
 Microcontroller and GSM based operation.
CELLPHOE-BASED REMOTE CONTROLLER FOR WATER PUMP
Timer IC 555 as a monostable
 Here (see fig) the IC works in a monostable or
"single-shot" mode. Initially the attached
external capacitor stays discharged internally
(through a transistor). A negative trigger less
than 1/3 VCC applied at pin #2 initiates a flipflop action, quickly discharging the capacitor
and subsequently driving the output high.
This results in an exponential increase in the
voltage across the capacitor. The time period
of this change can be expressed through the
formula, t = 1.1Ra.C. The capacitor is fully
charged after this period when the voltage
across it finally reaches 2/3 VCC.
• The flip-flop is then reset back by the internal comparator stage of the IC,
resulting in an immediate discharge of the capacitor and ultimately the output
shifts to logic low state.
