Gerontechnology Research Center, Yuan Ze University (I)
Started preparation in 2000/10.
Started a 3-year research project “Establishing an Intelligent Maintenance
System for the Quality of Life of the Elderly” in 2001/08, funded by the
National Science Council, Taiwan.
Was invited to exhibit the tele-homecare concept in a demo house in “IT
Month for the Elderly” (長青資訊月) at Taipei, in 2001/10.
YZU GRC was officially established in 2003/01.
YZU GRC held the first “Elderly Care and Gerontechnology Conference” at
Tauyuan in 2003/09.
GRC, YZU (II)
YZU GRC was invited to exhibit its tele-homecare robot as one of the main
themes in “2003 IT Month”, at Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Koushiung, from
2003/11 ~ 2004/01
YZU GRC was invited to exhibit its telepresence robot in 2004 “Taipei
International Industrial Automation Exhibition” at Taipei in 2004/07.
GRC, YZU (III)
YZU GRC was the only academic institute in Taiwan invited to present its
research in “Continuous Care Giving for Elders and its Novel Solution through
Innovative Information and Communication Technologies” International
Conference, held by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2004/10.
YZU GRC was invited to exhibit the
smart home concept in the first IT Month
in Kinmen in 2005/4.

Tele-homecare
Tele-homecare can be defined as the use of information and communication
technologies to enable effective delivery and management of health services at
a patient’s residence. [Office of Health and Information Highway, Canada,
1998]
Tele-homecare differs from tele-medicine in the sense that people who
transmit and receive medical information are not medical doctors but the
patients themselves and their families, nurses, care-givers, home-helpers and
medical technical experts, etc. [Masatsugu, 2002]
Characteristics of a Typical Tele-homecare System
The “health welfare
center” partnering with
a medical institution
play the central role
A centralized
database is often
used for data storage
and analysis
Telephone line and
the Internet are
commonly used for
data transmission
Users subscribe to a
service from the
health welfare center
To “mobilize” the measuring devices, wireless
communication technologies are been
implemented into the measuring devices
Tele-homecare Systems in Taiwan (I)
MEDCAN Health Management Inc. Asia Pacific Telehealth Technologies
亞太健康遠距科技股份有限公司
Tele-homecare systems has not been well accepted in Taiwan.
The infrastructure required is large and the cost of such tele-homecare service is
too high. This cost is not covered by medical health insurance.

Advantages of the PTMS’ Distributed Structure
The PTMS is a product-oriented system instead of a service-oriented system.
The PTMS can be easily adapted and implemented in a home environment at
very low cost.
Health monitoring data are stored within the household. Only authorized
caregivers can access the data. Privacy is better protected.
The route from the sensor to server is much shorter. Data transmission is
easier and more reliable. Data integrity will be better preserved.
The distributed structure of the PTMS can be adapted if a centralized database
is needed.
