INSPIRATION
The goal of this project was to provide a means of
testing a standard IC engine that has been modified
to run on both gasoline and steam. The idea is to
inject water into the heated engine after it has been
running on gasoline. The instantaneous vaporization
of the water will provide an extra power stroke
without the consumption of gasoline. This, in turn,
should increase the efficiency of the engine. The test
stand built in this project provides a means of testing
such a modified engine.
Customer Needs
The test stand must:
• measure performance parameters of engine
(including power and torque)
• log recorded test data
• provide a user friendly graphical user interface
• provide and control consumables
(gasoline/water)
• physically support the engine
• measure cooling effect of water injection
• run on standard 120V 20A wall outlet
• be compatible with Kohler CH5 IC engine
• be transported easily
Position Sensor
The engine position sensor
consists of two Photologic
Slotted Optical Switches.
When the timing disk
rotates, the signals received
by the two switches enables
the ECU to determine the
position of the engines
crank shaft as well as when
to inject the water. The
location of the switch
controlling the engine speed
is adjusted with a servo
motor .
Speed Control
Lab View GUI
Thermocouples
are used to
measure the
ambient air,
engine block, and
exhaust
temperatures.
The voltage
measured across
a shunt resistor
on the output of
the electric motor
is used to
determine the
engines power
output.
Optical sensors are used to
determine the engine’s RPM.
The engine speed is controlled
with a servo motor.

A servo motor is used to
control the home position of
the optical rpm sensor, this in
turn adjusts the injection
timing.
Project Outcome
The stroke mode control
allows the operator to switch
between 4 stroke (no water
injection) and 6 stroke (water
injection) mode on the fly.
The engine’s speed control
can be adjusted through the
LabView GUI via the servo
assemble that has been
fixed to the engine.
Team Steam
The hybrid gasoline/steam
engine test stand effectively
measures engine power output
and provides the necessary
controls to properly adjust
water injection timing for the
prospective hybrid engine. The
stand provides a sufficient test
bed to aid a future MSD team in
the testing of an IC engine that
has been modified to run on
both gasoline and steam.
