Scratch Robotics Construction System
Build-It-Yourself develops content and
supporting platforms that inspire and guide kids
to use technology creatively.

Scratch Robotics Construction System
The problem:
1. Many construction kits are expensive.
2. Some construction kits are taken off the market.
3. Some construction kits are very complex.
The mission:
To design a robotic construction system that:
1. Is under $30
2. Uses common parts
3. Is easy to use

Scratch Robotics Construction System
Strategy
LEGO™ and other robotics systems
use expensive microprocessors to
relay information to and from the
computer.
We use homemade mechanical
mechanisms to control the keyboard
and the mouse.
To control the motors from Scratch,
we use parts from Radio Shack that
cost under $25 to detect brightness on
a Scratch screen.

BIY Construction System Control Modules:
=================================
Wish List Notes
3 state motor controller based on self calibrating light detection.
Same torque as LEGO RCX motors.
Walkie Talkie
Control output devices with IR, sound or RF controller. What if we piggy backed on a walkie talkie
that has FCC approval and decode beeps to control signals?
Color led driverControlled by resistive sensor.
Recordable sound device:Triggered by touch sensor or light sensorMay not need this if Scratch is
ported to a cell phone.
All modules must:
-cost less than $20 in qty 1,000
- mount easily on a project board. (3"x8"x1/4" bass wood)
- connect via hookup wire and screw terminals. (No pre-made cables.)
- driven by 9V battery or USB power or AC/DC converter.
- incorporate protection against power to any terminal.
- be no larger than size of 9V battery. (Same profile as Cricket)
Consider one basic board with power, protection, terminals, status sounds and LED's, etc. that
can accommodate various sensor and output driver modules!
What if we developed a basic chassis or mechanical bread board where 3 motor/servos could be
mounted? (along with receiver, and batteries) The servos could be controlled by a Futaba 3
channel transmitter. Could we ‘hack’ a Futaba transmitter interface to a walkie talkie or Adrino or
Scratch motor controller switches?
