initial of your last name. Then discuss what you each wrote in your Venn
Diagrams.
• Share: Starting with the 1st group in the alphabet, share your Venn
Diagrams with the class using the microphone.
Introduction
• Using the poll toll, please answer “yes” or “no” if you can remember all 8
parts of speech.
• Every word in the English language belongs to one of just eight word groups
or eight parts of speech.
• A few of these 8 parts of speech are easy to remember – nouns, verbs,
pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Others are a bit more difficult to identify,
such as prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. We will break down
each of these 8 parts of speech in separate sections.
Nouns and Pronouns
Nouns
• Refer to a person, place, or thing.
Examples: student, cellphone, building, Jack
Pronouns
• Pronouns take the place of a noun.
Examples: my, me, she, he, his, her.
Verbs and Adverbs
Verbs
• Action words. They show action or a state of being, as well as whether it
took place in the past, present or future.
Examples: They whooped and laughed as they hurtled down the ski slope.
Adverbs
• Describe verbs, adjectives, as well as other adverbs. They specify how, when,
where, and how much something happens.
Example: The children were sleeping next door.
Adjectives and Conjunctions
Adjectives
• Describe or modify nouns. They say more about the noun, such as specifying
size, appearance, quality, quantity, origin, etc.
Example: This tiny, green and pink speckled tropical lizard is very rare.
Conjunctions
• Join words, phrases, or clauses (and, but, or, nor).
Example: Three of us went to the beach and the rest went cycling.
Prepositions and Interjections
Prepositions
• Show how a noun or pronoun is related to another word in a sentence (into,
behind, around, over).
Example: The car stopped close to the elephant by the road.
Interjections
• Exclamations. They are often followed by an exclamation mark (oh, well,
wow, cheers, hooray)
Example: “Wow” “Phew” and“D’oh” ( as Homer Simpson says).

tool to comment on what you learned from the video. The first person to
