
1st- Place students in pairs (2) or
groups of four (4). Group students by
high and low.
2nd-On cardstock paper type and paste
EOG questions that contain power
verbs. Put cards in brown envelopes
and give each group a envelope. You
will probably have at least 3 groups.
4
3rd- Each student chooses a card from the envelope,
reads the EOC question, finds the power verb and then
highlights the word. The student must answer the EOC
question. Each group can be required to answer each
EOC question and be prepared to share out in class
during Vocabulary square share out time. It can be
turned into a race when you set the timer on and give
rewards.
 4th- Pass out to each student a pastel colored sheet of
paper and have students to draw the
 Vocabulary Square. At the top of the paper students
will write the Power Verb and then create a
vocabulary square that looks like this:
********** SEE SAMPLE –Draw a sample for your
students and label each section!




5th- Students will Define the Power Verb, Write a
sentence with the Power Verb, Draw a Picture of the
Power Verb, Write a Synonym for the Power
Verb.***To enhance higher order thinking skills- Each
person in the group of four can have a responsibility.
One can define, another can paraphrase the EOG
question and so on….OR…It can be done individually
in which each student completes a Vocabulary Square.
6th-After completing the Vocabulary Square, each
student in the group will share with one person in their
group. Each partner will write down the other person’s
Power Verb on their Vocabulary Square and go
through the same process. Each student will walk
away with two power verb words on their Vocabulary
Square based on EOG and Content area questions!!
6




7th- Each group will present their Vocabulary Square Power
Verbs to the class in a quick class whip-around. Each
student will spend a maximum of 5-10 seconds presenting
his/her word to the class.
YOU CAN ACTUALLY TURN THIS INTO A RACE GAME
BY PLACING MORE INDEX CARDS INSIDE THE BAGS
AND THE GROUP THAT CAN FIND THE MOST POWER
VERBS AND CREATE THE VOCABULARY SQUARES
WITHIN A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD WINS THE
COMPETITION. YOU CAN SET YOUR OWN RULES.
Use the Vocabulary Squares that the students create to build
your word wall. When students encounter a word in the text
or on the EOG assessment, add to the Power Verb list.
Question……..refer back to the word wall vocabulary
squares.
