REPORTED SPEECH
REPORTED
STATEMENTS
HOW IT WORKS?
• We use a “reporting verb“ like say or tell. If this
verb is in present tense we just put “she says“
and then the sentence:
DIRECT SPEECH
REPORTED SPEECH
“I like chocolate.“
She says she likes
chocolate.
• We don´t change the tense but we need to
change the person from I to she.
• If the reporting verb is in the past tense,
the we usually change the tenses in the
reported speech.
DIRECT SPEECH
REPORTED SPEECH
“I like chocolate.“
She said she liked
chocolate.
Don´t forget:
• To report a statement we use reporting
verbs:
»Say + something: John said he
wanted to come.
»Tell + someone + something: John
told me he wanted to come.
»Other reporting verbs: reply, explain,
promise, claim, announce, declare.
