An Introduction to Verbs
SHOW ACTION
What are Verbs?
A verb is a word that tells what
people or things do. Verbs are
words that show action.
Can you show action?
Activity:
Volunteers act out an action using a yardstick.
Be creative! What could it be?
Type a sentence (on the next slide) that shows
the action being acted out.
Class identify the verb in the sentence, and circle
it using the pen tools.
Examples:
Shyra planted a tree.
Billy swings the golf club.
Type each sentence below.
Don’t forget to circle the verbs.
Lion on the Loose!
Write this story beginning.
Underline nine verbs.
Leo pushed the cage door with one
paw. The door swung open. He looked
around Parkwood Zoo. The old lion
walked out of the cage. He passed through
the gates of the zoo. Then Leo saw
something strange. Some big, shiny
creatures raced past him. The creatures
honked several times. Leo followed the
creatures into the city.
Challenge:
Write an ending to “Lion on the
Loose!”
Trade stories with a friend.
Underline all of the verbs in your
friend’s story ending.
