Deduction
It definitely isn’t orange juice.
Well, it can’t be because bananas are too big.
I’ve seen pictures of people ... so it must be sausages.
It might be Coca-Cola, but I’m not really sure.
I suppose it could be the UK, but I don’t know…
Perhaps it’s tea or Coca-Cola.

Modal verbs can be used not only for talking about rules, but also
for deduction. Their meaning is different.
We never use ‘to’ after modal verbs! He can’t to be at work.
It must be = I’m sure it is. We often add some proof and explain
why.
It can’t be = the opposite of ‘it must be’.
We don’t use 'mustn’t' for speculation.
It must be Yaroslav. He always comes to work at this time.
It can’t mustn’t be Yulia: she usually sleeps at this time of the day.
It could be/it might be/it may be = I’m
not really sure. There is no big difference
between these verbs.
It couldn't be
It might not be
It may not be
PRONUNCIATION:
It could be Yulia, but I can’t see.
It might be Yaroslav, but I’m not sure.
It couldn’t be Maria.
Other expressions
It must be = It’s definitely
It can’t be = It definitely isn’t
It might be = It’s probably
It might not be = It probably isn’t
In positive sentences definitely and probably come
after the verb ‘to be’, in negative ones - before.
It isn’t probably the right answer
Practice
The second sentence is in the wrong place. Match it to the
right deduction.
1) They can’t be short of money. You must be joking!
2) A new car? On my salary? They go on holiday three times a
year.
3) You must be Maria’s husband. I can’t remember anything about
last night.
4) I must be getting old. I’ve heard a lot about you!
5) Great news about your engagement. You must be absolutely
exhausted.
6) You’ve been working all day. You must be delighted.

We often use expressions with ‘must’ to
react to what people say:
You must be joking!
You must be kidding!
You must be exhausted!
