Los verbos como gustar
Verbs like gustar
¿A ti te gustan los deportes?
Do you like sports?
¡A mí me encantan!
I love them!
As we studied earlier, gustar means to please or to be
pleasing to. There is no verb that means to like in Spanish.
Me gusta el español. Spanish is pleasing to me.
A Juan le gustan las matemáticas. Math is pleasing to Juan.
Gustar and verbs that function like gustar, require the use of indirect object
pronouns.
me – to/for me
nos – to/for us
te – to/for you (tú)
os – to/for you (vosotros/as)
le – to/for you (Ud.), to/for him/her
les – to/for you (Uds.), to/for them
In addition to an indirect object pronoun, verbs like gustar are often
used with a + a pronoun to clarify or emphasize.
me  a mí
te  a ti
le  a Ud., a él, a ella
nos  a nosotros/as
os  a vosotros/as
les  a Uds., a ellos/as
A mí me gusta el fútbol, pero a ella le gusta el vóleibol.
I like soccer, but she likes volleyball.
Verbos como gustar
aburrir – to bore
A María le aburre la historia. History bores María.
encantar – to like a lot, to love (things, not people)
Me encanta la música de Christina Aguilera. I love Christina Aguilera’s music.
faltar – to lack, to need
¿Te falta dinero para el almuerzo? Do you need money for lunch?
fascinar – to fascinate, to like very much
A mi padre le fascinan los coches antiguos. Antique cars fascínate my father.
importar – to be important, to matter
A nosotros no nos importa el dinero. Money doesn’t matter to us.
interesar – to interest, to be interesting to
A ellos no les interesan las ciencias. The sciences don’t interest them.
molestar – to bother, to annoy
A mis padres les molesta mi música. My music annoys my parents.
quedar – to be left (over), to fit
¿Cuántos días de escuela nos quedan? How many school days do we have left?
¿Cómo te queda la chaqueta? How does the jacket fit you?
Remember that when mentioning the person(s) with verbs like gustar,
you must put an a before the person(s).
A Enrique le gusta cantar.
A los estudiantes les fascina este libro.
