Regular vs. Irregular
 The
AR verbs you have learned
so far are regular.
 When conjugated, regular verbs
follow a pattern.
 Irregular verbs do not follow a
pattern and must be memorized.

The Verb ESTAR
 Estar
is an irregular verb.
 It means “to be” in English.
 Estar does NOT follow the
pattern of the regular AR
verbs you learned.

 The
conjugation of estar is
irregular because:
– The
yo form is irregular, and
– The forms estás, está, and están
require accent marks.

The Verb ESTAR
 When
writing the forms of estar, you
must include an accent mark on all
forms except yo and nosotros.
 In Spanish, failing to include an
accent mark may change the
meaning of the word.

Uses of ESTAR
 Estar
is used to tell the location
of a person or a thing.
 Por ejemplo:
El

libro está en la mesa.
The book is on the table.
María

y Carlos están en clase.
Maria and Carlos are in class.
Uses of ESTAR
 Estar
is also used to tell the
condition of something or someone.
 Por
ejemplo:
María

Maria is sick.

está enferma.
y tú están ocupados.
Elisa and you are busy.
