El pretérito
The preterite tense is used to talk about
actions that occurred in the past.
– These events occurred and ended at
specific times
– These events usually lasted a short period
of time.
There are quite a few irregular verbs in
the preterite tense.
El pretérito
There are very few stem changes in the
preterite tense.
– If a verb is an –ir verb and has a stem
change, it will have one in the 3rd persons.
– The stem change in the preterite will be
similar, but not the exact same.
• Ejemplo:
• Dormir has an o to ue stem change in present,
in preterite has an o to u stem change.

– These verbs are identified by the way they
are spelled when conjugated.
• Some examples are: -gar verbs, -car verbs,
-zar verbs, y verbs, and j verbs.

El pretérito irregular (un aviso)
My tip would be to remember which
infinitives are irregular. At this point, do
not try to memorize all of the
conjugations.
– Once you have that information
memorized, whenever you come across
these verbs you can look them up!
