What are “–ar” verbs?



Any infinitive which ends with the
letters “-ar” is called an “-ar verb”
All infinitives in Spanish end with one
of three ways: -ar , -er or -ir.
Verbs ending with “-ar” constitute
the largest group of infinitives.
DEFINITIONS



First, let’s talk about some important
words and their definitions.
INFINITIVE = the most basic form of
the verb which can be identified by
words that end in –ar, -er or –ir.
STEM = the part of the infinitive that
includes everything EXCEPT for the
-ar, -er or –ir ending.
How do I conjugate “-ar” verbs?

Basically, you take the STEM of the
verb (all letters EXCEPT for the “-ar”
ending) and add the “ar” verb
endings.

Now, let’s form sentences!


Take for example the infinitive “necesitar”.
If I want to say, “I need a pen”, I would
say…
Necesito una pluma.

If I want to say, “They need a pen”, then I
would say…
Necesitan una pluma.
Now, you do it!

(buscar) Paco y Ana ________ el lápiz.
(preparar) Ud. __________ la comida.
(necesitar) Pablo y yo _________
el libro.
(contestar) Él ____________ al profe.
