What is a pronoun?
A pronoun refers to something, often a noun or
noun phrase.
Example:
My parents live far away. I miss them.
“them” refers to “my parents”
Types of pronouns
Subject: I, we, you, he, she, they, it
Object: me, us, you, him, her, them, it
Possessive: my, our, your, his, her, their, its
Subject pronouns
Subject pronouns are used as subjects of sentences:
John has a car. He drives it to work.
Who does “he” refer to? Where is the subject pronoun
in the sentence?
“He” refers to John.
The subject pronoun is BEFORE the verb.
Object pronouns
Object pronouns are used as objects of verbs and
prepositions.
John works in my office. I know him well. I talk to
him everyday.
Who does “him” refer to? Where is the object pronoun
in the sentence?
“Him” refers to John.
The object pronoun is AFTER the verb.
Possessive pronouns
Possessive pronouns are used to show possession.
Janie is helping me study math. This is her math
book.
Who is “her” referring to? Where is the possessive
pronoun in the sentence?
“Her” refers to Janie.
The possesive pronoun is BEFORE a noun.
