HELPING VERBS

WHAT IS A HELPING VERB?
• A verb always used with another verb that helps to display number, mood,
or past, present and future
IDENTIFY THE HELPING VERBS IN
THESE SENTENCES
• Andrew and Ryan are saving puppies from a
burning building.
• Andrew is skydiving off the Burj Khalifa while
Ryan is saving the world.
• Andrew will go to swim practice after he does his
homework.
TENSES IN HELPING VERBS
• Tenses in helping verbs help to show whether
something happens in the past present or
future
Forms of do: did, done, doing, does
PRACTICE
• I am ………… my homework. (do,does,did,done,doing)
• I will …………. Swim Practice later today.
(have,has,had,having)
OVERUSING HELPING VERBS
• Using Too many helping verbs can start to sound odd
Mom had washed the dog. Or… Mom washed the dog.
Helping verbs are almost always needed in sentences, but
when they aren’t needed don’t use them.
My mom did buy me a gift. Or…. My mom bought me a gift.
