For Friday: read pages 632-635 and
answer all questions on 634-635 (eight
questions.

What about these functions of nouns?
Subject
The who or what the sentence is about.
Ex. Donatello is my favorite Ninja Turtle.
Every sentence must have a subject, even if
it’s an understood subject.
Ex. Take out the trash.
As this is a command, the subject is
understood to be you.
Direct Object
The who or what that receives the action of
the verb.
Ex. I hit my brother.
Direct Objects must be in a sentence with
an action verb.
Ex. My brother told my mom.
Indirect Object
The who or what that receives the direct
object.
Ex. I threw my cousin a frisbee.
(Notice that I didn’t throw my cousin)
Indirect Objects must be in a sentence with
a direct object.
Ex. I sold my sister a gift card.
(Notice that I didn’t sell my sister)
Object of a preposition
The who or what that is tied to the
prepositional phrase.
Ex. I bought the gift card at Target.
Objects of the preposition can only be
objects of the preposition. It cannot also be
a subject, direct object, indirect object, etc.
Ex. At Target I met the girl of my dreams.
(Notice that Target is not the subject)
Predicate Noun
The who or what that renames or describes
the subject.
Ex. My brother is a veterinarian.
Predicate Nouns must be in a sentence with
an linking verb.
Ex. The Vaulx family is a family with eight
cats.

each of the following:

What are the functions of adjectives?
Adjectives
Describe nouns only.
They answer these questions:
What kind? Which one? How many/much?
Examples: statuesque building, jovial boy,
remote village, a billion cats, fuchsia leaves,
plentiful berries, etc.
What are the functions of adverbs?
Adverbs
Describe verbs, adjectives, and other
adverbs.
They answer these questions:
How? When? Where? How often? To what
degree?
Examples: easily lifted, cried later, come
here, very tall, extremely carefully stepped,
bathed regularly, fell yesterday, etc.
Identify each of the underlined words as an
adjective or adverb.
1. The lanky, surly man very reluctantly
gave his money to the haggard gypsy.
2. A chilling wind rapidly pushed seven
giant eagles down the slowly sloping
hillside today.
3. A cheaply tattooed waitress from sunny
California sourly stared out the speckled
glass doorway at a barrage of incoming
customers early that morning.
