Temporal
Aspect
Temporal - pertaining to time
Aspect - how an event, described by a verb, is viewed.
Last night I studied for my test.
 Every night I study math.
 I have been studying for the math test
for a month!
 I studied for my test for 2 hours.
 I crammed for the Math exam last night.

Uninflected –

The problem, activity or situation
has only occurred once.
YESTERDAY STORE ME GO-TO
Inflected

Verbs can be signed (inflected) in
different ways for a variety of
purposes.
So far we’ve talked about how
verbs…
Are directional…
They show who did what to
whom:
 I gave you the money.

MONEY me-GIVE-TO-you
Show location & movement
They show how something is
moved from one location to
another:
 I moved the book from the chair to the
table.


CHAIR TABLE BOOK MOVE-UP
But there’s more…
Verbs can also be inflected
(changed) to show the
frequency and duration of
the action.


Recurring (Regularly)

The problem, activity or situation occurs
frequently or regularly
 every
month
 every day
 every Monday (Tues, etc)
 every year
 again and again and again…
Recurring (Regularly)

In order to show a recurring
inflection, you sign the verb with
several repetitions. The key word
here is EVERY. However,
sometimes the “every” is implied.


This is made with repeated, small straight line
movements, makes it plural.
Something happens frequently, a lot.
*There is no implied opinion, it is just stating a fact.

Ex: My mom is a crier.


This is made with a repeated cycle of a tense
straight line with an arc to repeat.
Soemthing happened repeatedly for a long time.
*This DOES have an implied opinion of it happened
too much. (not normal)

Ex: After the break up, Suzy was a mess for months.
Continuous (Duration)

The problem, activity, or situation
has occurred continuously with
little interruption
 for
an hour (2 hours, etc)
 all morning/afternoon/evening
 all week
 all month
 all year
 for a long time
Continuous (Duration)
The key word here is ALL- or
ALL-ALONG. However, the
length of time can be implied
as well.



This is made with a repeated circular movement.
It means it is continuous, “for a while”
*There is no implied opinion; it is just stating a fact.

Ex: After he fell, the little boy cried for a little bit.


This is made with with slower, repeated elliptical
movements.
Something happened for a prolonged period of
time
*This DOES have an implied opinion of it happened
for TOO long. (not normal)

Ex: After the break up, Suzy was crying inconsolably.
Important note…


Frequency and duration of time are relative to
the speaker.
What one person considers to be frequently or a
long time, might not be for another person.
-If a man likes going to a restaurant, he might say
we go often. (regularly).
His wife may not like the restaurant and might sign
it with the “over and over again” sign.
Important note…

Not all verbs can be inflected. Even
if they are repeated or continuous,
they are signed just once.
How do you know which ones? Hang out with Deaf
people and pick it up =) Sorry, that’s my best
answer.
Above all else remember…


There is NO fixed time to these
signs.
Think CONCEPTUALLY!
