Conditionals
If – clause
Examples
 If you come home early,
 If you are late,


Main clause

we will go to the cinema.
we will go without you.

When the If – clause comes before the main clause, they are separated with a
comma (,).
 When the main clause comes before the if – clause, we don’t seperate them
with a comma (,).
Example:
If you come home early, we will go to the cinema.
We will go to the cinema if you come home early.

Types of Conditionals
1st type
If + Present Simple

→ i) Future Simple
ii) imperative
iii) can/must/may + bare infinitive
use
When something can happen in the present or future


We can use unless instead of if ...... not. After unless the
verb is always used in the Affirmative.

2nd type
If + Past Simple
→
would/could/might
+ bare infinite
use
When something cannot happen in the present or future


We can use were instead of was

If + Past Perfect

→
would/could/might
+ have + past participle
use
When something couldn’t have happened in the past


It expresses regret
