• It belongs in the family of verbs known as –er.
• You already know some other –er verbs. Can
you think of any?

• These verbs are in the same family because they are
conjugated the same way.
– Conjugate is an important word here. What does it
mean?
– To conjugate means to change the verb so that it
agrees with the subject.
– English verbs are also conjugated, but not so
elaborately.
• Can you conjugate an English verb?

• Today you are learning how to
conjugate all –er verbs. This opens
a world of linguistic opportunity.
Now you can make sentences.

Here it goes…
First, drop the –er at the end of the infinitive. This is called the stem.
For example, aimer becomes aim, jouer becomes jou. Then, write the
endings.

tu (you)

vous (you)

ils, elles
aiment
(he, she, one)

Notice that the endings change.
The stem stays the same.

• See, that was easy!
• To recap, conjugating verbs is essential. In 6th
grade you learned expressions and nouns. As 7th
graders you have entered into much more
sophisticated territory. By conjugating verbs you
can make sentences!
• Just remember the endings!
