¡¿Which word do I choose?!
• Looking up words in a Spanish/English
dictionary can be confusing. Often times a
word can have many different meanings and
many different translations.
• So how can we make sure we are looking up
the right word?
• Let’s take a look…..

• First of all, let’s choose a word. For example:

• Looks confusing huh? How do we decide which word is the
right translation of “wheel”?
• Well first we need to think about how we are going to use
that word in a sentence. Are we using the word as a noun,
or as a verb.
• If we want to say “the wheel of the bus goes round and
round” then wheel is being used as a noun.
• If we want to say “She wheeled around in her chair, “ then
wheel is being used as verb.
• On the dictionary entry, you will see certain words that let
you know if the translation is a noun or a verb.
– If it is a noun, the word “sustantivo” will be present
– If it is a verb, the word “verbo” will be present

Let’s just look at the “sustantivos” for now.
• wheel 1 /hwiːl / || /wiːl/ sustantivo
1. a. (of vehicle) rueda f;

to set o put (the) ~s in motion poner(conj.⇒) las cosas en marcha;

3. wheels pl (car) (colloq) coche m
We still have several different translations to choose from. To narrow
them down we need to decide what type of wheel we are talking
about.
Anywhere that you see the ~ sign, substitute in the word “wheel.” This
will help give you an idea of the different types of wheels being
discussed.
Can you figure out the Spanish word for a car steering wheel? volante
What about a ship steering wheel? torno
How about if you want to talk about the wheel of a truck or car?
rueda
Great. Now that we know how to choose the sustantivo that we want,
we need to know if it is masculine or feminine.
• wheel 1 /hwiːl / || /wiːl/ sustantivo
1. a. (of vehicle) rueda f;
to oil the ~s allanar el camino;
to set o put (the) ~s in motion poner(conj.⇒) las cosas en marcha;

3. wheels pl (car) (colloq) coche m
The letter m will appear next to masculine sustantivos, and the letter f
will appear next to feminine sustantivos.
Is a car steering wheel masculine or feminine? masculine
How would you say “the car steering wheel?” El volante
How would you say “the potter’s wheel?” El torno
How would you say “the vehicle wheel?” La rueda
Now let’s look at the “verbos.”
•
wheel 2 verbo transitivo ‹bicycle/wheelchair› empujar;
‹person› llevar (en silla de ruedas etc)
verbo intransitivo
a. (turn suddenly) ~ (around o (BrE) round) [person] girar sobre sus (or mis etc) talones, darse(conj.⇒) media

Verbos intransitivos do not have direct objects.

Girar sobre sus talones, or, darse media vuelta, or, volverse
