Jugar – to play
• This verb has a stem change. What
does that mean?
• The stem of the verb changes when you
conjugate it.
– In this case, the stem is:
jug
• The u in the stem becomes ue
• In Spanish this is called a “stem
changing verb”.
Stem changing verbs cont.
• NOTE: The nosotros and vosotros forms
do not stem change.
• After you made the stem change,
conjugate the verb with the regular
endings.
Steps for conjugating “stem
changing” verbs.
1. Decide if the verb has stem change and
what it is. (Ex: Jugar – yes, bailar - no)
2. Write the stem with the stem change.

3. Look at the ending. Is it –ar, -er, -ir? (-ar
verb)
4. Add the correct ending.
