What is a verb?

A verb is a word that indicates the action of the
sentence.
There are 3 different types of words that are verbs:
Physical: to run, to hit, to talk, to walk
Mental: to hope, to believe, to imagine, to dream
Condition: to be, to feel, to have, to seem
You cannot write a complete sentence or express a
complete thought without a verb.

• The first Spanish verb we will review is the verb:
SER.
• The verb SER means: “To be”
• SER is an irregular verb- meaning that is has no
pattern
• SER is a very important and common verb in the
Spanish language. We use SER for many
things. One way to remember the uses of SER is
with the acronym DIDOP

D- Description (describing your looks and
personality)
I- Identity (religion/ race/ gender/nationality)
D- Date and time
O- Origin (where you are from)
P- Profession (job or title)

• To use the verb ser, we have to conjugate (change) it to
match the subject pronoun of the sentence.
• We can plug the forms of ser into the chart we used for
subject pronouns. This cart is shown below.
SER= to be
Yo soy- I am
Nosotros somos- we are
Tú eres- you are
Vosotros sois- you are
Él es- He is
Ellos son- they are
Ella es- she is
Ellas son- they are
Usted es- you are
Ustedes son- you all are

• Today we are going to work with origin- where we use
ser to say where we are from.
• All we do is add the word “de” directly after ser, then say
the country which we are from.
EXS:
¿De dónde eres tú?- Where are you from?
Yo soy de España- I am from Spain
¿De dónde es Juan?- Where is Juan from?
Juan es de Mexico?- Juan is from Mexico
¿De dónde son ustedes?- where are you all from?
Somos de América- We are from América
