Brain Based Research
• It is better to teach smaller chunks, and have
students practice independently, than to
teach large objectives that cannot be reached.
• Tells us that we forget up to 80% of what we
learn within 24 hours if we do not practice it.
Critical Attributes of
the Learning Objective
Includes a skill (verb) and a concept (noun)
derived from content standard
2. Matches independent practice
3. Presented to students in understandable
language
4. Can be completed in one lesson
1.
Examples of Effective Learning Objectives
ELA: Identify similes in literary works
Math: Graph ordered pairs
Science: Identify three states of matter
History: Determine absolute locations using
latitude and longitude

Deconstructed Standard
Sample Deconstructed Standard:
ELA: Identify similes in literary works
4th Grade: Literary Response and Analysis
3.5 Define figurative language (e.g., simile,
metaphor, hyperbole, personification)
and identify its use in literary works.
Steps for
Deconstructing Standards
1. Identify verbs (skills) and label with a capital
letter: A, B, C, etc.
2. Identify nouns (concepts) and label with a
number
3. Match each letter with a number (i.e. A1, A2,
A3, B1, B2, B3)
Step 1: Identify Verbs (A, B, C)
Step 2: Identify Nouns (1, 2, 3)

alliteration in poetry.

Step 1: Identify Verbs
Step 2: Identify Nouns
Step 3: Match Verbs and Nouns
Questions to Ask Myself About
the Learning Objective
1. Have I deconstructed this standard to an
achievable, clear, measurable, learning
goal?
2. At the end of today’s lesson, what is
the matching independent practice that
students will complete to prove to me
they met the objective?
A Cautionary Note!
Beware of:
• Objectives that are too broad, too vague or
do not match the independent practice (this
is all usually a function of the verb)
• Using verbs like: Know, Learn, Understand,
Introduce, Discuss, Examine…..
“Students who can identify what they are
learning significantly outscore those who
cannot.”
