一. Time Words
A. As moveable adverbs: Before verb, before or after subject
(before subject for emphasis)
我今天不吃飯。I’m fasting today.

我早上不喝酒。I do not partake of wine before noon.

昨天我很累。Yesterday I was very tired.

A. As verbs (with unstressed 很 heen for simple positive form
他好不好﹖
他很好。
他不好。
Ta hao bu hao? (Ta) heen hao. (Ta) bu hao.
Is he (any) good? Yes. He’s good. No. He’s not
good.
He’s
fine.
He’s no good.
那個很硬。That one
is hard.
Neyg heen yinq.
那個人很奇怪。That guy is strange.

B. As verbs with stressed 很 heen : Very
他今天很奇怪。He was (is) very strange today.
Ta jin.tian heen chyiguay.
他的屋子很亮。His room is very bright.
Ta.de utz heen lianq.
丁一的酒很不好。Ding I’s wine is very bad.
Ding I .de jeou heen bu hao.

C. With other adverbs:太 tay, too;真 jen, really, truly;
夠 gow, enough, sufficiently. (an adverb)
這麼 Tzemm.me, so (to this extent)
那麼 Nemm.me, so (to that extent)
他的女朋友太多。 His girl friends are too numerous.
Ta.de neuperng.yeou tay duo. He has got too many girl friends.
他真好。 He is really good. Isn’t he great!
Ta jen hao.
(honestly or sarcastically)
我的床不夠硬。My bed is not hard enough.

D. With 有一點儿 Yeou.ideal
or 有點儿 Yeou.deal: a little, a bit, somewhat
西拉諾的鼻子有點儿大。 Cyrano’s nose is rather big.

牛肉有點儿生。 The beef is a bit rare.
Niourow yeou.deal sheng.
丁一的學校有點儿奇怪。

E. With 的 .De:
1. To modify nouns: (N.B. An adjective modified by
an adverb must use .De 的 to modify a noun).
軟的床不好。Soft beds are no good.
Roan .de chwang buhao.
太硬的飯不好吃。Rice that is too hared doesn’t taste good.
Tay yinq de fann bu hao chy.
我很喜歡很老的椅子。I like very antique chairs.

E. With 的 .De:
2. As substantives (with modified noun understood):
好的不多。There aren’t many good ones.
Hao.de buduo. (Good ones aren’t many.)
我要一個硬的。I want a hard one.
Woo yaw ig yinq.de.
3. Used with 是 sh to categorize:
他是好的。He is one of the good ones.
Ta sh hao.de.
那個是舊的。 VS
那個很舊。
Neyg sh jiow .de.
Neyg heen jiow.
That’s and old one.
That one is old.

F. With 多 dwo or 多麼 dwo.me
1) As a question:
他多高﹖ How tall is he?
Ta dwo gau?
你喜歡多生的牛肉﹖ How rare do you like your beef
Nii shii.huan dwo sheng .de niourow?
2) As an exclamation:
你看,他多高!Look how tall he is!
Nii kann, ta dwo gau!
他的朋友們多麼奇怪。Boy, are his friends weird.
Ta.de perng.yeou.men dwo.me chyiguay!

三. A, sh A, Dann.sh .. 是.. , 但是.. :

我喜歡是喜歡,但是太貴。
Shii.huan, sh shii.huan, dann.sh tay guey.
I like it, but it’s too expensive.

Ding I .de muu.chin yeouming, sh heen yeouming,
dann.sh Ding I hair.sh ig huay-dann.

四. New Situation 了 .Le
好了。It’s ready. It’s o.k.now. It’s done. He’s well now.
Hao le.
牛肉壞了。The beef has gone bad.

丁一又有女朋友了。Ding I has got another girl friend.

他不要了。 He doesn’s want any more.
Ta buyaw .le. He doesn’s want it anymore.

Ding I’s mother doesn’t like me anymore.

五. Imperatives
1. Positive:
a) 吃 。Eat it.
Chy.
b) 你說。Tell me (us, him, her, them)
Nii shuo.
c) 說中文。Speak Chinese
d) 你們喝。You drink it.
Shuo Jongwen.
Nii.men he.
2. Negative:
a) 別吃。Don’t eat it. B)不要吃了。Don’t eat anymore.
Bye chy.

c) 別 說英文。Don’t speak English.

六. Jyue.de 覺得:
1. To feel :
我今天覺得很累。I feel very tired today.

你還覺得不舒服嗎﹖Do you still fell uncomfortable?

2. To think that (When stating something that can
only be a matter of subjective opinion.):
我 覺得你是個大壞蛋。I think you are a blackguard.

中國人覺得龍是好的。Chinese think that dragons are good.
