WHO WAS APOLLO?
God of music, art, poetry, oracles, archery, plague, medicine,
sun, knowledge, and light. Symbol of the perfect looking man
Son of Zeus and the Titan Leto, grew up on Delos, a Greek
island, with his older twin sister Artemis
Had many sons; Asclepius is his most famous son
Dolphin, swan, and wolf - sacred animals, Laurel – sacred
tree
APOLLO’S LIFE
Had his lyre, made by Hermes, which was used to inspire him along
with his nine muses he kept at his side
Also had a chariot and was said to pull the sun across the sky
everyday
Defended the oracle Delphi against Hercules
Was in the Trojan War, infected Greeks with plague, and helped out
Paris to kill Achilles
Killed the Cyclops that armed Zeus with his thunderbolt as vengeance
for Zeus killing his son
Blessed with the gift of “beardless and athletic” appearance
ALLUSIONS TO
APOLLO
Twitches, Disney Channel. Twins in show were named Apollo and
Artemis. While Apollo had the gift of art and sight, Artemis was
raised with more “looks”.
Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight landing men on the moon
Apollo Theater in Harlem – the arts

The poem “Lycidas” refers to a laurel, which is a
symbol of Apollo
