PRIMORDIAL GODS
• Also known as…
• “Primordial Deities”
• “Protogenoi” or first beings
• “Elementals” – meaning they had no bodies
• They are the basic components of the universe which were
emerged at creation.
• They included Earth, Air, Sea, Sky, Fresh Water, Underworld,
Darkness, Night, Light, Day, Procreation and Time.

Origin: Chaos is the Origin of all things
•
AKA: Chaos, Haos, Khaos, Arche. (No clear gender. More of a thing than a being)
•
Source of which everything was created including the universe and the gods. (The Primordial Primordial).
•
Chaos is also a place. It is its own home
•
It is the creator of Gaia, Eros, Nyx, Tartarus, Erebus. And has some direct relation with all of the Primordial.
•
Chaos is the origin
•
The only being to be around since the beginning of time
•
Chaos is the void into which everything is created
•
From Chaos, without a mate, came Gaia, Eros, Tartarus
•
It’s literally just a void, no gender, no physical form, nothing. Its an endless void of nothingness
•
Tartarus was a primordial god that came from Chaos and Gaea.
•
No roman name and is a male.
•
Tartarus is a name used to describe the underworld, where it was the most
horrible prison
•
The judges of the underworld, Aeacus and Minos, would decide who would
go to Hades (heaven) or Tartarus (hell).
•
Origin: Chaos birthed Tartarus
•
Gender: Male
•
Relationships: son of Chaos, father of Typhon, had a child with Gaia,
created the same time with Gaia, Eros, Nyx, and Erebus
•
God: God of the Underworld and is a horrible prison that terrible monsters
and people are sent
•
Dwell: it dwells in itself; it is a place
•
Fun Fact: Many of the Titans are locked away in Tartarus; third in rank
behind Chaos and Gaia
EROS
• Origin- Believed to be son of Aphrodite (goddess of love) and
Ares (god of war)
• Gender - Male
• Roman Name- Cupid
• God of love and sexual desire, also fertility
• Lives on Mount Olympus
• Has the power to make anyone fall in love
• Carries a bow and arrow
TYPHON
100 dragon heads
• Parents-Gaia and Tartarus
• Male
• God of monsters and was condemned to the
underworld
• Father of monsters such as Ladon, Cerberus,
Sphinx, Chimera, Hydra, Nemean Lion,
Orthus.
• Battle with Zeus and was defeated and sent to
the underworld
• most feared monster in all Greek mythology
• no other mythical creature, god or monster
was as powerful, dangerous, or deadly.
• Origin: Uranus was conceived by Gaia alone, but other
sources cite Aether (personification of the upper air)
as his father.
• Roman name: Caelus (Latin for “sky” or "the heavens”
or “celestial”).
• Primordial God of the Sky
• The Greeks thought of the sky as a solid
brass dome that was decorated with stars.
• Uranus was the literal sky.
• FUN FACTS ABOUT URANUS
• Married his sister, Gaea ( Primordial
Goddess of Earth)
• Banished his first sons, the Cyclopes, to
Tartarus out of disgust
• Murdered by his son Kronos with a diamond
sickle given to Kronos by Gaea
• Kronos severed Uranus’s genitals, and threw
them into the ocean. This created sea foam
from which Aphrodite, goddess of love and
beauty, was born.
OUREA (ROMAN: MONTANUS)
• The Ourea were the
Protogenoi (primeval gods)
or rustic Daimones (spirits)
of the mountains
• The ten ourea – Aitna, Athos,
Helikon, Kithairon, Nysos,
Olympus 1, Olympus 2,
Oreios, Parnes, and Tmolus
were the offspring of Gaia
alone.
PONTUS
 Was a male primordial god who ruled Sea
 Son of Gaia (has no father)
 Pontus and Gaia had five children (Nereus, Thaumas,
Phorcys, Ceto and Eurybia)
 Lived in the Sea
 His wife was Thalassa
 Pontus was also the father of fish and other sea creatures
 Also known as Pontos

DIETI OF CREATION, LIFE)
• NYX’S ROMAN NAME IS NOX, SHE IS A
FEMALE
• NYX IS THE DIETI OF NIGHT/ HER
HOME IS EREBUS AND SKY
• NYX COUPLING WITH
EREBUS(DARKNESS) SHE FORMED
AITHER(LIGHT) AND HEMERA(DAY)
• NYX ALONE FORMED THE THREE

• Momus is a creation.
• His roman name is Querella.
• Momus is the God or personify spirit of mocker, blame,
ridicule, scorn, complaint, and hash criticism.
• He was expelled by Zeus from heaven for ridiculing the
gods.
PONOS
• The god of hard labor and toil.
• Son of Eris, goddess of discord and
grandson of Nyx, the goddess of night.
• His siblings were Horcus, Limos, Algea,
the Hysminai, the Makhai, the Phonoi, the
Androktasiai, the Neikea, the
Pseudologoi, the Amphilogiai, Dysnomia,
Ate, and Lethe. They were all
personifications of wrong doings or
negative situations, such as pain, fights,
murder, lies and forgetfulness.

• Moros was the god o
impending doom who
drove mortals to their
doom
• Moros had no father but
he was the son of Nyx
• He also was the brother of
the Morai or the Fates
• All of the major and minor
gods that were not related
to him lived in fear of what
Moros could or would do
to them.
THANATOS
• Origin: Son of Nyx(night) and Erebos(darkness)
• Male. Roman name: Mors or Letum.
• Personifies death
• Not in many myths
• One with Sisyphus
and one with Hercules
HYPNOS
• Mother- Nyx, Father- Erebus
• Hypnos is a Male
• The God of Sleep
• Lives in the Underworld
• Him and his brother Thanatos
“Death”, both live in the
Underworld
• His father Erebus, was a part of
Hades
GERAS
• Son of Nyx, goddess of the night, and Erebos, god of
darkness
• Roman Name: Senectus
• Geras is male
• God of old age
• Depicted as a very small, skinny, and shriveled up
old man
THE HESPERIDES
• Daughters of Erebus and Nyx
• 3-7 of them
• Nymphs of the Sunset
• Garden of Hesperides belonged to Hera
• Golden apples believed to grant immortality grew there
• Hesperides guarded them with Ladon, the 100 headed dragon
• One apple started the chain of events leading to the Trojan War
• One of Hercules’s tasks was to steal an apple
THE KERES
• Origin: Agents of the Fates, Daughters of
Nyx and Erebos
• Translation: Death Spirit, Doom
• Female spirits of violent/cruel death
• Thousands of Keres haunted the battlefield,
searching for dead soldiers to feed off of
• Personification of misery

 Spirit of divine retribution against those who are arrogant towards the
gods.
 Also known as the “inescapable”
 Goddess who lured Narcissus to the pool of water
APATE (ROMAN: FRAUS)
• She is the personification of
deceit of guile, fraud, and
deception
• She is one of the evil spirits
released from Pandora's box
PHILOTES
• Female
• She was the spirit of
friendship, affection and sex
• Parents are Erobes and Nyx
• She was considered the
opposite of the Neikea (the
Feuds)
• Her siblings are said to be
Apate (Deceit) and Nemesis
(Envy)
ERIS
• Child of Nyx alone
• Female; no Roman name
• Goddess of chaos, strife, and discord
• Dwells in Erebus, or the Greek underworld
• She was responsible for the start of the Trojan War.
