What are live CDs?
• “Live” because it can run an operating system existing on the disc
without installation
• Functions as a bootable operating system
What are live CDs?
• Most live CDs are read only
What are live CDs?
• Run independent from a computer’s secondary storage
• Files are instead places into RAM
• The only requirement is to have enough RAM
Why live CDs?
• Allows users to use a preview of an operating system
• If they like it, they can install it from the live CD as well
• First live CD was FM Town OS in 1989
• Live CDs very popular with Linux distributions
• Recovery from failed hard drives
• Hacking
