Why Use Linux?
Powerful, modern design
Freely available source code means no lock-in to a single vendor
Thousands of free, powerful applications
Support for standards
Lower total cost of ownership i.e no licensing fees
Stable, powerful and virus-free
What is Linux ?
From servers to ipods, hardcore programmers to enthusiasts, all inclusive
6GM installation to floppy bootable, Linux is everywhere. Linux is standing
today showing the IT world the innovation that can be achieved by sheer
community work. And, Linux is free too. It appears, there is after all
something like a free lunch! When the world around you is trying Linux, why
would you want to be leaving behind the excitement?
What Is Linux?
In popular usage, “Linux is an operating system.” ,however, the strictest definition of
Linux is only the kernel. The more relaxed definition would be an overall package called
a distribution that is ready to install and use. There are well over 300 distributions of
Linux, most of them containing commonly-needed applications—and even games!
Linux was originally meant to be a UNIX clone. Here, by “clone,” we mean that
it would look and behave like UNIX. But bear in mind that Linux does not contain a
single line of UNIX code! The source code of the two is entirely different.
Open Source-Where Everyone Can Be a Developer?
A source code is the program code exactly as it is written by the programmer: the raw code
that is not compiled and is editable is the source code. (Compilation is the process of
finalising a code for execution.) For an operating system, the source code runs into
several Thousands of lines that appears “as written.”(Needless to say, deciphering the
l ogic behind the source code an be quite a task even for a competitive programmer.)
Since the source code is in raw, un-compiled format, anyone who has access to it
can make his own additions, deletions or changes—and hence his own versions of the
software with modified or added features.
What is a Linux Distribution?
This is where the beauty of open source lies. Computer magazines and Linuxrelated web sites discuss Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, the Novell
Linux Desktop, Fedora Core Linux, and many other things ending in
Linux, each available from a different company or organization. We found
over 350 different distributions of Linux on www.linux.org! Wecan’t say
all of them are bug-free, but work is ongoing, and support is available for all
major distributions.
Ubuntu Vs Linux
Linux is a generic term referring to Unix-like operating systems, and it has various types
of distributions; Ubuntu is just one of them. Actually, Linux was officially introduced
only in 1991 by its famed creator Linus Torvalds, who at the time was a student at
the University of Helsinki in Finland. Little did he know that his creation would grow
in size and popularity to the extent it has today.
The reason for the increasing awareness of Linux operating systems for personal
computing use, is mainly due to the Ubuntu distribution founded in the year 2004.
What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is based on Linux, a project initiated by the South African, multimillionaire
named Mark
or
Shuttleworth. It is in fact
just one of the Linux distributions,
‘distros, along with Fedora, Suse, Mandriva and Debian. To date, it is perhaps the most
popular one, as it was claimed to be most used type of Linux based OS in desktop
installations.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning”humanity to others”.Ubuntu also
means “what I am because of who we all are”. Ubuntu provides a user friendly and
stable OS which is targeted towards the average computer user. It boasts simplicity, and
ease of installation as well.
