Linux Open Source
Evaluation
Ryan Bradshaw
What is Linux?
Richard Stallman founded free
software in 1983
known as the GNU Project.
The first goal of GNU was to
develop an operating system
that was free.
The free operating system was
created in 1992 and was called
Linux.

Linux
Today Linux is used in
various systems and
supercomputers.
Has a secured place for
server installations
GNOME and KDE are
desktop environments
aimed at making the
system more user-friendly
with a graphical user
interface.
Linux
Developers created Linux to be open
source so everyone could use it freely.
Today Linux is the most well-known,
widely used open source software.
The advantage to Linux being open source
is it allows for rapid software bug detection
and elimination.
This helps correct security exploits.
Linux Accomplishments
In 1998 as a part of an open source
initiative Oracle corporation announced it
would implement Linux in to it’s database
software and provide support for it.
In 1999 IBM spent millions of dollars on
Linux, employing 300 developers of the
Linux Kernel.
Did Linux Meet it’s goals?
One of the original goals of creating Linux from
the GNU project was for it to be open source.
The software is still open source today.
Linux has also achieved interoperability with
other operating systems.
Interoperability also provides users free choice
of software and data formats without restricting
them as a result of that choice.
