What is Linux?
Linux is a free Unixtype operating system
originally created by
Linus Torvalds with
the assistance of
developers around the
world.
History
• The Linux kernel was first
released to the public on 17
September 1991, for the
Intel x86 PC architecture.
• Linux is packaged for
different uses in Linux
distributions.
The More You Know!
• Predominantly known for its
use in servers, Linux is
supported by corporations
such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard,
IBM, Novell, Oracle
Corporation, Red Hat, and Sun
Microsystems.
How Does Linux Relate To
Servers?
• Linux is very important
where concerned with
servers.
• Linux is commonly used as
an operating system for
supercomputers.
Linux Web Server
• The Linux Web Server uses
the Apache Web Server to
serve the pages, along with
FTP and DNS to upload
content and point uses from
domain names to your IP
respectively.
Things You Didn’t Know!
Directive
Description
start
Start the Apache httpd daemon. Gives
an error if it is already running.
stop
Stops the Apache httpd daemon.
graceful
Gracefully restarts the Apache httpd
daemon. If the daemon is not running,
it is started. This differs from a normal
restart in that currently open
connections are not aborted.
restart
Restarts the Apache httpd daemon. If
the daemon is not running, it is
started. This command automatically
checks the configuration files as in
configtest before initiating the restart
to make sure the daemon doesn't die.
Linux Security Measures
• See Distribution erratas and
security fixes.
• It is best for security
reasons that you reduce the
number of network services
exposed.
TRUE? FALSE? IN MY PRESENTATION? IT’S
MORE LIKELY THAN YOU THINK
• Linux is the cornerstone of the LASP
server-software combination (Linux,
Apache, SQL, Perl/PHP/Python)
• FALSE: It is actually LAMP, and the M
stands for MySQL
• With inetd, network code is required in
the application-specific daemons
• TRUE!
MOAR TRUE/FALSE (But no candy )
• To Restart the daemon to apply changes you
would type: /etc/rc.d/ini.d/inetd restart
• FALSE! You’d type /etc/rc.d/init.d/inetd
restart
• Netcraft reported in September 2006 that
eight of the ten most reliable internet hosting
companies run Linux on their web servers.
• TRUE!
