 Solar panels are devices
that convert light into
electricity. They are called
"solar" panels because
most of the time, the
most powerful source of
light available is the Sun,
called Sol by astronomers.
Some scientists call them
photovoltaics which
means, basically, "lightelectricity."
How solar panels work
 Systems can certainly be
built that will provide all
your electricity
requirements, especially in
counties receiving a good
number of sunshine hours
per year.
 Once the system has been
installed, the electricity
generated can be
considered to be almost
free and environmentally
friendly.
What does solar panels contain
• Solar panels contain
photovoltaic cells wired
together in serial or
parallel, topped with
protective glass or plastic,
and backed with an
aluminum or other base.
Photovoltaic cells are
made of semiconductor
material, often silicon.
