Dust Clouds at the Center of
Milky Way
Stanislav Kováč
• In our Milky Way and in external galaxies, the space between
the stars is filled with an interstellar medium consisting of gas
and dust
• Extinction is a term used in astronomy to describe the
absorption and scattering of light emitted by astronomical
objects by matter (dust and gas) between the emitting object
and the observer.
• interstellar extinction varies with wavelength
such that the shorter the wavelength the
stronger the extinction
• reddening
• To measure the extinction curve for a star, the star's spectrum
is compared to the observed spectrum of a similar star known
not to be affected by extinction (unreddened)
• Extinction in the direction of the centre of Galaxy is about 25
magnitudes.
