1. Improving Access to Radiotherapy and

4. Establishment of Legal and Regulatory
infrastructure for the control of radiation
sources in PNG
Regulatory Framework
• Legislation – Has been drafted and will be
finalised soon for Parliament endorsement
• Regulations- work on developing draft
regulations is on going.
• Regulatory Body – National Institute of
Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT)
has been appointed to be the regulator for
radiation safety and work has been ongoing to
capacity build the regulatory.

• Current system – users/importers send
notification to Ministry of Health for intention
to possess radioactive source
• Customs require notification/authorization
from Dept of Health in order to release the
radiation sources to the importers/users.

on orphan source search which has made us
aware of the need of such.
• No programs for the promotion of orphan
source search in PNG
• No example of orphan source recovery taken
place in the country
• From this regional training course on orphan
source search, we will design a program for
orphan source search in our country.
