It is by Allah's mercy that you are gentle to them, had you been harsh and
hardhearted, surely they would have dispersed from around you. therefore,
excuse them; plead for forgiveness for them and consult them in the affairs” .
(3:159)
In this verse, Allah (swt) has pointed out and praised one of the most
important characteristics of his messenger (p.b.u.h. & h.f.), which played a
significant role in attracting the people towards Islam; and that is of what
has been termed as al-rifq.

gentleness is the same al-rifq in Arabic and kindness, mildness &
friendness in English. so you can use these words in your research for
prophet( pbuh & hp)’ s gentleness.
The time goes back to when Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was leader of the
Muslim society in Madinah. He (S.A.W.) is preparing to participate in the collective
prayers, when a Jewish man approaches the Prophet (S.A.W.) in an alley and claims
that the Prophet (S.A.W.) owes him. The Prophet (S.A.W.) replies: "Firstly, I do not
owe you, and you claim for no reason. Secondly, I do not have money with me at this
time, allow me to leave." The man does not allow the Prophet (S.A.W.) to take another
step. The gentle behavior of the Prophet(S.A.W.) only causes the man to act harsher.
The Jewish man grapples the Prophet (S.A.W.), ties the Prophet's cloak around his
neck, and pulls hard on the cloak. Muslims, now wondering why the Prophet (S.A.W.)
has delayed in his arrival for prayer, search for the Prophet (S.A.W.), only to find him
in the dilemma with a Jewish person demanding money. They want to behave harshly
but the Prophet of Allah (S.A.W.) says: "Leave him alone. I know how I should behave
with my friend." The Prophet’s behavior to the Jewish man was so compassionate that
the Jewish man utters "I bear witness that there no God except Allah and you are the
Messenger of Allah". Now a Muslim, the man then adds, "when you endured me with
such a power, I realized that this is not the endurance of a normal man; this is a
prophetic endurance…“http://www.imamreza.net
In battle Uhud, the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) had instructed the Muslims not to
leave their positions until they were told to do so. They did not follow the
instruction; They left their positions in greed of getting their hands on the
booty, and as a result, they were attacked and surrounded by their enemies;
In order to save their lives, some Muslims escaped to the nearby mountains
leaving the Holy Prophet (pbuh &hp) and some of his companions behind to
deal with the situation; Many so-called prominent companions were among
those who fled.
After the battle of `Uhud, these Muslims deserved to be punished. But, the Holy
Prophet (pbuh&hp) did not punish them. Instead, he (pbuh&hp) dealt with
them gently and with mildness.] (Tafseer-e-Namuna) .
More than 1400 years ago in Arabia the people were living very much in fear. They feared
their neighbors. They feared other tribes. They even feared their idols. For this was the
time before Islam. The Arabs were worshipping idols. In their ignorance they would
bury their newly born daughters alive. As Islam began to spread among Arabs such
cruel practices stopped. Islam taught love and peace. It taught respect, kindness and
forgiveness.
Prophet Mohammed (saw) himself was a very kind and loving person. Prophet
Mohammed (saw) treated every one, young and old, with respect and kindness, because
Prophet Mohammed (saw) was spreading the word of Allah (SWT). And he was
changing, for better, the lives of many Arabs and because some Arabs felt that by the
teaching of Prophet Mohammed (saw) their old idols were losing power they disliked
Prophet Mohammed (saw) and planned to kill him. Every time they tried to kill him,
they failed. This angered the enemies of Islam even more. So they began to harass him
in every way they knew.
One old woman made a habit of throwing rubbish on Prophet Mohammed (saw) whenever he passed from her
house. Prophet Mohammed (saw) had to pass that house daily on the way to the mosque. Even when the old
woman threw rubbish on him, he would pass silently without showing any anger or annoyance. This was a
regular, daily event.
One day when Prophet Mohammed (saw) was passing by the woman was not there to throw the rubbish.
Prophet Mohammed (saw) stopped and asked the neighbor about her well-being. The neighbor informed
Prophet Mohammed (saw) that the woman was sick and laying on the bed. Prophet Mohammed (saw)
politely asked permission to visit the old woman. When allowed he entered the house, the old woman
thought that he had come there to take his revenge when she was unable to defend herself because of her
sickness. But Prophet Mohammed (saw) assured her that he had come to her, not to take any revenge, but
to see her and to look after her needs, as it was the command of Allah (SWT) that if any one is sick, a
Muslim should visit him and should help him if his help is needed.
The old woman was greatly moved by this love and kindness of Prophet Mohammed (saw). By the example of
greatness of Prophet Mohammed (saw), she understood that he was truly the Messenger of Allah (SWT)
and Islam was the true religion. She accepted Islam at once by reading the Shahadah (La Ilaha Ill Allah
Muhammad Rasool Allah, There is no god only Allah, Muhammad is the Rasool (Messenger) of Allah).

PROPHET MOHAMMED AND THE YOUTH (A CONVERT TO ISLAM)
One day a youth approached Prophet Mohammed (saw) and with utmost disrespect and discourtesy, said: "O' Prophet
of Allah! Do you permit me to commit fornication?"
These words created a great uproar amongst the people and objections could be heard from every nook and corner.
Prophet Mohammed (saw), exhibiting sublime ethics and speaking with absolute gentleness, said: "Come near."
The youth stepped forward and sat down beside him (saw), whereupon Prophet Mohammed (saw) asked: "Would
you like someone to commit the act with your mother?" The youth replied: "May I be made your ransom, never!"
Prophet Mohammed (saw) said: "Similarly the (other) people too do not approve of this with respect to their
daughters."
Prophet Mohammed (saw) continued: "Tell me: Would you approve of this act for your sister?" Once again the youth
denied (and repented having asked the question).
Prophet Mohammed (saw) placed his hands upon the youth's chest and prayed for him, saying: "O' Lord! Purify his
heart, forgive his sins and protect him from the pollution of depravity." From then onwards fornication became the
worst of the deeds in the eyes of the youth.

The Prophetic Hadiths in Al-Khisal
A characteristic that constitutes half of the religion
‫حسن الخلق نصف الدین‬
Being good-tempered constitutes half of the religion.
A characteristic that is the best thing given to a Muslim
:‫ “ما افضل ما اعطی المرء المسلم؟” قال‬:‫قیل لرسول هللا صلی هللا علیه و آله‬
”.‫“الخلق الحسن‬
God's Prophet was asked: “What is the best thing given to a
Muslim?” He replied: “A good temper.
It was by the mercy of Allah that you were gentle with them (O, Mohammad) for if you had
been harsh and hard of heart they would of dispersed from around you. So pardon them and
pray forgiveness for them and consult with them in the affair "(Quran 3:159).
This verse from the Holy Quran indicates that Prophet Mohammad's (sas) attitude was a factor
in attracting people to Islam. Any leader who wants to summon people to God should also be
gentle and lenient in his personal attitude.
The importance of this verse is that one should be lenient as an individual, but not in principles.
The Holy Prophet (sas) was very firm when it came to principles and showed no flexibility or
softness. If some one insulted him, he would forgive them kindly, because that was something
related to himself. But if anyone violated Islamic laws and rulings, the Holy Prophet would
treat them with severity and justice.
(1)
Once someone stopped the Holy Prophet (sas) and claimed that the prophet owed him
some money and that he would not let him go unless he received the amount
immediately. The Holy Prophet said: "I don't owe anything, but even if I do, let me go
home to get you your money". The man said that he would not let the Prophet take
another step. Ignoring how gently the Prophet (sas) had
behaved, the man acted fiercely and rudely, to the point that he took the Holy Prophets
gown off and wrapped it around his neck and pulled it, until it became bruised.
The Holy Prophet (sas) had been on his way to the Mosque and when people noticed that
he was late, they went in search of him and found a Jew obstructing in the way. At that
point the Muslims wanted to slap and punish this rude fellow, but the Holy Prophet
(sas) said: "No, you people don't interfere, I know what to do with my friend".
Observing this humble attitude and leniency, the Jew embraced Islam right there and
said: "You are so powerful yet you are so lenient, and this is not possible for an ordinary
man. I bear witness there is no God except Allah and that you Mohammad are the
messenger of Allah. "

When the Holy Prophet (sas) entered Mecca after the city had been conquered, a woman from amongst the
wealthy Quraish aristocrats had stolen something important and and according to Islamic rules, her hand
had to be cut off. The women was a popular influential figure of Quraish, and her relatives tried to save her
by persuading the Prophet not to go ahead with the ruling because the
women was the daughter of such a wealthy and upper-class family and if her hand was to be cut off the whole
family would be disgraced.
The Prophet said: "Impossible, I cannot suspend the ruling. If this women was not a member of the aristocracy
(rich & famous) you would all agree that she must be punished, but now you say she should not be
punished because she would be disgraced. How can I forgive her? Never. The laws of Allah will never be
suspended and no excuses will be accepted ".
From the two incidents we see that the Holy Prophet (sas) never compromised in matters regarding principles,
but when his own interests were in question, he was extremely lenient and generous. Some of the reasons
behind the progress of Islam were because of his excellent conduct, attitude and characteristics displayed
by the Prophet (sas) and the way he lived.
His great role as a Prophet, Messenger, guide, leader and all the great characteristics of different personalities
combined into one man excelled him over all other men in history, and also because of the Holy Quran,
which was a miracle given to the Holy Prophet (sas) from Allah. The unique beauty, depth, elegance and
(3)
This is why Allah mentions in the Holy Quran in regards to the greatness of the Holy Prophet.
(QURAN 68:4) "AND SURELYYOU ARE OF AN EXALTED CHARACTER".
Thus a man who talks or preaches from his heart, will win the hearts of others, and whoever talks and
preaches from his mouth, his words will not penetrate hearts. In the messages delivered by men of God,
this point is clearly observed but not in the messages of other leaders of the world.
The Holy Prophet Mohammad (sas) transformed the world from it's ignorance and idol worship to that of
monotheism and salvation. He carried out the most remarkable tasks under unbelievable hardships but
always maintained his kindness, generosity and forgiveness, which truly characterises the messenger of
God. In him the highest perfections were assembled. He was in reality that
perfect infallible man before whom the angels were ordered to prostrate. That is why Allah and his angels
praise and bless him and those who are faithful are commanded to also praise and bless him and are
required to learn, follow and benefit from the life and teachings of the Prophet Mohammad.
Attitude & Conduct of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAW) ; BY: Martyr Murtaza Mutahari
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when entered Makkah, after victory, posed a question to
the Quraysh: "How do you think, I am going to treat you now?" They said: "You
are a generous brother, and the son of a generous brother. We expect only
charity and forgiveness from you." He said: "I will tell you what Joseph said to his
brothers, 'there is no blame on you today.' (Qur’an. Chapter 12; verse 92), Go
now; all of you are my freedmen."
The Prophet declared a general amnesty in Makkah. The amnesty extended even to
the apostates. He forbade his army to plunder the city or to seize anything that
belonged to the Quraysh. Quraysh had left nothing undone to compass his
destruction and the destruction of Islam; but in his hour of triumph, he condoned
all their crimes and transgressions. (Ref: The Messenger of Mercy, Lahore, Pakistan, 1970, by, Abul
Kalam Azad)
One of the benefits of being gentle with others is that
`gentleness leads to peaceful solution of problems’.
Whenever two people, or two groups of people quarrel with
each other, and neither of them shows gentleness, their
problem will never be solved. As soon as one of them
shows gentleness, the other mellows down and an
agreement is reached between them.
The Holy Prpohet(pbuh&hp): “Gentleness leads to peace”
(Mizan al-Hikmah)
The behavior of the Prophet (SAW) towards the people and his
manners were so pleasant and excellent that they attracted all
people. 'Ammar said, `The Prophet and I were engaged as
shepherds before the advent of the prophetic mission. One day I
suggested to him, `Let's go to the Fakh pasturage'. He agreed.
`The next day I went there and saw that he had preceded me but
prevented his sheep from grazing there. I asked him the reason. He
replied, `I did not wish my sheep to graze here before your sheep
because we had taken this decision together’. (Ref: Bihar ul-Amrar,
Vol. 16, p.224)
"The person is most esteemed in the sight of Allah who pardons, when he has
in his power, him who shall have injured him."
"He is not strong and powerful, who throws people down, but he is strong
who withholds himself from anger."
"A Muslim is he from whose tongue and hands Muslims are safe."
"Verily Allah instructs me to be humble and lowly and not proud, and that
no one should oppress another."
"Allah is not merciful to him who is not so to mankind. He who is not kind
to Allah's creation and to his own children, Allah will not be kind to him.“
While these ahadith, except one, are not explicitly descriptive of the Prophet
(saw), they do inform the discussion because they show that the Prophet
(saw) placed great emphasis in his teachings on being gentle, kind and
merciful to others. Everything he said he also lived, so all of the above
sayings from him were also displayed and modeled in his behavior. A Brief
History of The Fourteen Infallibles"
The twelve dirhams donated to the Prophet (S)
Imam Sadiq (A) reports that a man went to see God's Prophet (S). When he saw that the Prophet's shirt was
old, he gave him twelve dirhams (silver coins). The Prophet (S) said: “O Ali! Take this money and buy
me a shirt with it.
” Ali (A) said: “I went and bought the Prophet (S) a shirt with twelve dirhams and took it to the Prophet
(S).” The Prophet (S) looked at it and said: “O Ali! I would like a different shirt! Do you think that the
seller would take it back?” Ali (A) replied: “I do not know.” The Prophet (S) said: “Then try it.” Ali (A)
went back to the seller and told him: “The Prophet of God (S) doesn't like this shirt. He wants another
shirt. Please take it back and return my money.” Then he returned the money to the Prophet (S). The
Prophet (S) accompanied Ali (A) to buy another shirt. They came across a slave girl who was sitting
there and crying. The Prophet (S) asked her: “Why are you crying?” She said: “O Prophet of God! My
master gave me four Dirhams with which to buy things from the market. I don't know where I lost that
money. Now I don't have the courage to go back home.” The Prophet (S) gave her four dirhams and told
her: “Buy whatever you had to buy and go back home.” Then the Prophet (S) went to the market to buy a
shirt for himself for four dirhams.
He (S) put it on, praised God, the Honourable the Exalted and returned. On his way back from the market,
the Prophet (S) saw an unclothed man who kept on saying: “God will put heavenly attire on whoever
clothes me.” Then the Prophet (S) took off his shirt and put it on the needy man.
Then the Prophet (S) himself went to the market to buy another shirt for himself with
the last four dirhams. He (S) put it on, praised God, the Honourable the Exalted and
returned. On his way back, he came across the slave-girl again who was sitting there
and crying. The Prophet (S) asked her: “Why didn't you go home?” She replied: “O
Prophet of God! It is too late for me to return and I am afraid that they might beat
me.” The Prophet of God (S) said: “Walk ahead of me and take me to your house.”
The Prophet (S) walked with her until they reached her house. He stopped at the
door and said: “O residents of this house, Peace be upon you!” There was no
response. He gave greetings again but they did not respond. So he greeted them for
the third time. Then they said: “O Prophet of God! Please, His Blessings and His
Mercy be upon you!” The Prophet (S) asked: “So what was the reason that you
didn't respond to my greeting the first and the second time?” They said: “O Prophet
of God! Yes! After hearing your voice for the first time we came to know that it was
you. However, we loved to hear your voice over and over again.” God's Prophet (S)
said: “Your slave-girl has taken a long time to come back. Hence, I have come to
request that you do not punish her.” They said: “O Prophet of God! Due to the
blessing of your gracious arrival at our home, we have set this slave-girl free.” The
Prophet (S) said:
‫ كسا هللا بها عاریین و أعتق نسمة‬،‫الحمد هلل ما رأیت اثني عشر درهما أعظم بركة من هذه‬
“Praise is due to God. I have not seen any twelve dirham's more blessed than these.
With them, God clothed two unclothed persons and freed a slave-girl. THE PROPHETIC
HADITHS IN AL-KHISAL P. 828, NO 70.
“Bless, oh God, the guide to Thee in the darkest night, him who, of Thy ropes,
clings to the cord of the longest nobility, him whose glory is evident at the summit
of stout shoulders and whose feet were entrenched in spite of slippery places in
ancient time “ (Dua-e-Sa’Ba’h, Amir’ul Mo’mi’neen a.s)
God’s Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, never regarded himself as greater
than anybody else. No one could distinguish him among his Companions except for
his radiant face and attractive person. He lived as the poorest of them, dressed like
them, sat among them and ate with them, as he did with slaves and servants. Once,
a woman saw him eating and remarked: ‘He is eating as if he were a slave.’ God’s
Messenger responded to her, saying: Could there be a better slave than me? I am a
slave of God.

In the construction of the Mosque in Madina after the Hijra,
he carried two sun-dried bricks while everybody else
carried one. In the digging of the ditch around Madina to
defend the city in the Battle of the Ditch, the Companions
bound a stone around their bellies because of hunger, but
God’s Messenger himself bound two, because he was more
hungry than anybody else.

The Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) has said, “If
gentleness could have been a creature perceived
by eyes then it would have been the most beautiful
of all creations of Allah (SWT)”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)
He (pbuh&hp) also said, “Wherever gentleness is
exhibited, it adorns the place”. (Kanzul-`Ummaal)

“Gentleness leads to peace” (Mizan al-Hikmah)
In olden days, it would just take a small thing to trigger a big war between two tribes. The war would last for years killing
many people and destroying families. Islam put a stop to this by introducing the concept of being `gentle’ and
`forgiving’ to each other.
[Once a Bedouin Arab came to Madina and visited the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp) to seek his guidance and advice. The Holy
Prophet (pbuh&hp) said to him: "Do not lose your temper" and said nothing more than this.
The man returned to his tribe. When he arrived among his people, he noticed a serious problem had occurred. Few young
men of his tribe had stolen some things from the other tribe and they had retaliated. As a result, they had gradually
reached a stage of waging war against each other and had come out face to face with their weapons for the
confrontation.
He immediately sought for his armour and taking up his weapon joined his tribe to fight against the other tribe. Suddenly,
he recollected the words of the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hp), "Do not lose your temper". He was soon in deep thoughts
asking himself: Why have I become so excited? Why have I taken up my weapon to shed blood? What made me so
furious? Thereupon, he left his weapon and came forward to address the other tribe. He said, "What is this war for? If
few ignorant men from our tribe have committed transgression against you, I am ready to recompense from my
personal wealth. So there is no reason to jeopardize our life and shed blood for nothing". When the opposite side heard
this magnanimous proposition from this man, their generosity and zeal was aroused and they said in reply: "We are in
no way inferior to you. Now that it is so, we will forgo our demands". Consequently, both the parties retreated to their
tribes.] (Usul al-Kaafi)
La Martin famous French poet- says: "If we take three aspects into
consideration, none other can equal Prophet Muhammad(PBUH&HP): his
lack of equipment, his speed in success, and the greatness in his aim. A
man emerges and presents an invitation, while equipped with the least power
and support, not even from his close friends and family who in fact turn
against him as his enemies. He emerges alone, without a companion or
colleague, and begins his mission from self, until others gradually come to
accept the message. They joined him while bearing difficult prosecutions
and troubles...!" According to La Martin, if we take the above matters into
consideration, none other is like the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP).
